PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Smitty Luttermoser dropped a 2-run bloop single down the right field line to give UWF a 10-9, walk-off win for a doubleheader split with Montevallo at Jim Spooner Field Sunday. The Falcons won the first game, 6-1.
UWF improved to 23-7 on the season and 22-7 in Gulf South Conference play. UM moved to 11-15 overall and 8-15 in league contests.
Dylan Menhennett extended his hitting streak to 19 games after going 4-for-7 with his team-leadiing eighth home run, two runs and two RBI in the twin bill.
For UM, Ben Teel had four hits and drove in five runs, while leadoff hitter Riley Cain also had four hits and scored four runs.
GAME ONE – Montevallo 6, UWF 1
UM scored four of its six runs with two outs and got 5.2 innings of shutout ball from starter Hogan Isbell (2-4) for the win in the afternoon contest.
The Falcons got on the board first, scoring three runs with two outs in the third inning. Brandon Moore and Cain came home on a Teel single through the left side. A batter later Khalid Collymore scored when Jake Smallwood hit a ground ball that would have ended the inning but it caromed off the third base bag and allowed the run to score.
UM stretched the lead to 4-0 in the top of the seventh on a Cain RBI chopper up the middle that scored Moore.
Menhennett crushed a solo home run to left to lead off the seventh and trim the margin to 4-1.
The Falcons scored two more in the ninth, with Cain and Matt Simon crossing the plate on a Teel single up the middle.
Evan Floyd (6-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits while five strikeouts.
GAME TWO – UWF 10, Montevallo 9
Luttermoser, who had appeared in just two games this season as a pinch runner and pinch hitter, went 2-for-3 off the bench with three RBI to lead UWF.
Miller Hancock scored four runs as he collected two hits and walked three times.
UWF wasted no time in game two, scoring a pair of runs in the first frame. After Hancock reached with a walk, he stole second and later scored on an
Adam Imwalle single up the middle. Menhennett scored a few pitches later on a wild pitch.
An inning later, the Argos chased starter Daniel Buice from the game and then O'Shea hit a 2-out, 2-run single into right field before Menhennett knocked another ground ball up the middle that made it 5-0.
The Falcons pushed a pair across in the third when Moore scored from third on an infield chopper deep in the hole at short. A batter late, Jake Smallwood inside-outed a ball into left field that drove in Collymore.
Luttermoser blooped a ball into right field to score Hancock and extend the lead to 6-2 in the fifth.
UM gained some momentum, with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a 2-run double to right by second basemen Reed Latimer. They tied it at 6-6 on Cain's double off the wall in the sixth before adding a pair of RBI hits from Teel and Ryan Curran for an 8-6 lead.
UWF bounced back with a run in the seventh on a
Matthew Estrada RBI single. They knotted it up at 8-8 in the home-half of the eighth when
Sam Clement drove in
Justin Dunnam, who had reached via an intentional walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
UM took the lead back on Mitch Fleming's solo home run to left in the top of the ninth.
That paved the way for some Argo heroics. With two outs in the ninth, Cullen O'Shea reached on a throwing error that moved
Miller Hancock to third. After intentionally walking Menhennett to load the bases, Luttermoser hit the first pitch he saw and dropped it just inside the first base line as Hancock and O'Shea both scooted home to give the Argos the win.
Josh Pahlad (2-0) earned the win after working the final 3.2 innings. Chandler Ingram (2-2) took the loss as he allowed three runs on three hits and three walks.
The teams will play the final game of the series on Monday at 1 p.m.
