PENSACOLA, Fla. - The 10th ranked UWF Baseball Team scored 13 runs in the fifth and sixth inning combined to defeat Montevallo by a final of 14-3 on Monday afternoon on Jim Spooner Field.
Â
With the victory, West Florida moves to 24-7 overall and 23-7 in the Gulf South Conference while UM drops to 11-16 on the year. UWF secured their eighth-straight series victory with the Monday win.
Â
Seven different Argonauts earned a hit in the game, including
Tyler Dowdy, who started at the designated hitter role for the first time in his career.
Sam Clement and
Adam Imwalle also had two hits, while
Cullan O'Shea and
Justin Dunnam scored three runs apiece.
Â
West Florida got on the board first, as the Argos plated a run across in the second inning when Dunnam flew out to center, scoring O'Shea from third after the first baseman doubled to open the inning.
Â
UM would score a run of their own in the next frame as Ben Teel knocked a single up the middle off of UWF starter,
Jason Roberts, to score Riley Cain.
Â
Despite the run, Roberts was very efficient in his five innings of work as the freshman threw five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out one to earn the win and move to 2-0 on the season. He also set down the Falcons in order in both the fourth and fifth frames, striking out Riley Cain to end the fifth.
Â
After being limited by Falcon starter, Logan Samuels in the first four innings, the UWF offense exploded for eight runs in the fifth. With the first three batters of the inning reaching base, including Dowdy who earned his first career hit to load the bases, third baseman
True Fontenot lined a ball to left to score a tagging up Dunnam, who had walked to lead off the frame.
Â
Following a walk by
Miller Hancock to re-load the bases, Matt Estrada promptly unloaded them with a single to right that was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing all three runners to score and make it 5-1. Estrada would score three pitches later on a sac fly by
Dylan Menhennett. Menhennett extended his hit streak to 20 games with a hit in the first inning and also maintained his team RBI lead with his 33
rd on the sac fly.
Â
West Florida would tack on three more runs after they Clement knocked a single up the middle to unload the bases again as Imwalle, O'Shea scored, with Hancock coming home following a throwing error by the Montevallo centerfielder.
Â
UWF added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on three singles from Clement, Dunnam and Imwalle to make it 12-2. Dowdy earned his first career RBI with a single later in the inning to score Dunnam, while an RBI on a fielder's choice by Fontenot made it 14-2.
Â
UM threatened the Argonauts in the top of the seventh with two bases loaded opportunities, including one that led to a sacrifice fly from Teel that scored Matt Simon, before
Brendon Case came in to strike out Asa Awbrey on a full-count, stranding the bases loaded and ending the contest.
Â
Cain and Teel both had two hits for the Falcons, with Teel leading the visitors with two RBI's.
Â
West Florida will have an off-day before traveling to Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile, Alabama to face Spring Hill in a double-header. Both games will be seven innings in length with first pitch on Wednesday scheduled for 3 p.m.
