No. 9 UWF Splits Double-Header At West Georgia

Rubber match Monday at 1 p.m. ET

Game 1 | Game 2

CARROLLTON, Ga.
– The ninth ranked UWF Baseball Team split a double-header at the University of West Georgia on Sunday afternoon with the Argonauts taking game one, 10-6, and the Wolves capturing game two, 6-4.

Both teams will square off in tomorrow's rubber match with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. ET from Cole Field in Carrollton, Georgia.  Tyler Dowdy is expected to start on the mound tomorrow for the Argos.  With a win tomorrow, the Argos can clinch their ninth straight Gulf South Conference series.

West Florida (25-8, 24-8 in the GSC) was led offensively by centerfielder Dylan Menhennett who tallied four hits on the day.  With a hit in each contest, the redshirt senior extended his hitting streak to 22 games, tied for the second longest in program history.  Adam Imwalle totaled four hits on the day as well, with Miller Hancock and Menhennett each having three RBI's on the afternoon.

"We had a nice come from behind win in game one", said UWF Head Coach Mike Jeffcoat.  "Both of our starters did a nice job.  The second game we just let slip through our hands and we need to be better tomorrow."

Game 1: UWG got on the board first to open the scoring in the second inning as Joe Skinner singled through the left side to make it 1-0.  The Argos would quickly respond however, as Clement opened the third inning with a lead-off single.  Following a hit-by pitch of True Fontenot and sac bunt by Hancock to put runners on second and third, Matt Estrada delivered the first RBI for the visitors with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Clement and knotting the game at one.

The Wolves would score five straight runs of their own as a Dan Oberst two-run homer in the bottom of the third made it 3-1, with Oberst adding to the run total with a bases clearing triple off of UWF starter, Evan Floyd, in the next inning.  Floyd would labor through five innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with three walks and five strikeouts to pick up the no-decision.

After only totaling four hits through the first five innings off of West Georgia starter, Robert Coleman, the Argo offense found new life in the top of the sixth.  Menhennett opened the inning with a single to left field, with O'Shea immediately hitting a single to right field to put runners on first and second with no outs.  With the lead-off single, Menhennett extended his hitting streak to 21 games, tying for the third longest streak in team history.  Imwalle, in the next at-bat, singled to left field to score Menhennett with O'Shea coming home as well on an error by the Wolves left-fielder.

Imwalle would score later in the inning on an RBI ground-out by Clement to put the score at 6-4.  Alex Knight, coming in on relief of Floyd, was dynamic.  Throwing three scoreless innings, Knight faced the minimum, picking up five strikeouts in the process on only 30 pitches to earn his first win of the season.  UWF would strike for six runs in the top of the eighth to put distance between the two squads.

After three straight singles to open the inning, capped by a pinch-hit RBI single from Dowdy, the Argos pulled within a run.  With UWF chasing Coleman from the game after a sacrifice bunt from Clement, Fontenot singled through the right side off of reliever Sawyer Steele, to tie the game at six.  The next batter, Hancock, singled through the right-side again to score Dowdy and Fontenot, who had stolen second, making it 8-6.  West Florida would score the final two runs of the game on a two-RBI double to left-center by Menhennett.

Josh Pahlad pitched the final inning for the Argos, inducing a double-play and a fly-out to end the frame.

The opener of the double-header marked the third straight contest the Argonauts scored 10 or more runs and had 10 or more hits.

Coleman took the loss for UWG as the right-hander threw 7.1 innings, allowing seven runs on ten hits while striking out six. Oberst led all Wolves with three hits with Jason Fointo adding two hits of his own.

Game 2: After both teams went scoreless in the first three innings, the Argonaut offense broke through in the top of the fourth for three runs.  Dowdy, starting at designated hitter in the second contest, opened the frame with a single through the left side.  Justin Dunnam followed with a single of his own and two batters later, Joey Wozniak walked to load the bases.

Fontenot then came through with an RBI single to score Dowdy before two runners scored on a groundout from Hancock to make it 3-0.

UWG struck in the bottom of the frame off of UWF starter, Ryan Brewer, who had been perfect through the first three innings.  After getting the first two outs of the inning, the Wolves pounced with a single from Brody Wortham, who later scored in the inning on a wild pitch.

The Wolves tacked on five more runs in the next two frames to make it 6-3 with three different Argonaut pitchers making an appearance.  Hunter Lucas and Brendon Case were the two other pitchers to throw in the ballgame with Case throwing a season-high 2.2 innings, with no hits allowed, one walk issued and two strikeouts.

West Florida added a run in the top of the seventh when Menhennett hit a single to centerfield to score Hancock from second. The Argonauts would load the bases in the top of the ninth but the inning would end on a double-play to make the final, 6-4.

Jack Rasmussen earned the win on the mound for the Wolves, throwing 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with three walks and five strikeouts.  Brewer took the loss for UWF as threw 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in his first appearance since March 21st.

Wortham and Colin Moore each had two hits for the Wolves with Fointno adding two RBI's.
