Men's Golf

No. 1 UWF Crushes Tournament Record With 18th GSC Title

Elias Haavisto tied the GSC individual record and led for the final 43 holes

COMPLETE RESULTS

MOBILE, Ala. – The top-ranked UWF men's golf team set a Gulf South Conference Championship record with an 840 total to win the league title for the eighth-consecutive year and 18th overall.

UWF shot 285 on the Crossings Course at the RTJ Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove on Monday, claiming the title with a 24-under-par score by 11 shots over Lee. The previous GSC 54-hole record was 850 set in 1979 by Nicholls State.

The championship was the 105th for UWF across all sports and the second this year following women's swimming & diving's NSISC title in February.

The Argonauts entered the day with a 9-shot lead but saw it shrink to three late on the front nine. But the squad responded and re-established control, playing holes 9-14 at 6-under-par while the Flames played the same set at 2-over-par which resulted in an 11-shot margin with four holes remaining.

At that point, with the team title all but secured and the scoring title within reach, the drama shifted to the race for medalist honors, where Argos Elias Haavisto and Alejandro Restrepo were setting up for an big finish.

Restrepo made his fifth birdie of the day on 14 to tie his teammate at 13-under for the tournament. The scores remained that way entering the final two holes but Restrepo made bogeys at both, allowing Haavisto to finish with a string of seven pars on his way to tying the championship record of 67-65-71=203, set in 2014 by former Argonaut Juan Miguel Heredia.

It is Haavisto's first win in six Spring events and his third overall after two titles last year as a freshman at Averett University. This marks the 14th time a UWF player has won the GSC crown and the first since Chandler Blanchet went back-to-back in 2016 and 2017.

Restrepo finished in second at 71-65-69=205 for his fifth-consecutive top-6 finish. The senior has played his last eight rounds under par and lowered his season stroke average to 70.67.

Carlos Marrero ended his first GSC appearance with a tie for sixth at 72-70-73=215. Jake DeZoort ended his debut GSC event tied for 11th at 71-74-72=217. Cameron Bonner tied for 30th place at 73-74-79=226.

UWF has played its last 83 holes at an amazing 45-under-par.

The Argonauts will return to play at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Championship in two weeks. The 54-hole event will be May 6-8 at the Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Florida. The NCAA will announce the field on Friday afternoon.
