West Florida Fights Off Delta State to Secure Spot in GSC Championship

Third time this season Argonauts have taken down the Statesmen

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In their toughest test so far in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, the No. 8 West Florida Men's Tennis team took down No. 10 Delta State 4-3 to advance to tomorrow's championship match. This victory now marks ten straight GSC Championship appearances for the Argonauts and they will be fighting No. 3 Valdosta State for the conference title.

From today's match, doubles proved to be the deciding factor as the Argonauts picked up victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to secure the lone point.

Serdar Bojadjiev and partner Lluis Miralles Miro secured the Argonauts first win of the day pulling out a 6-3 victory from the No. 2 position. Nicolas Lecoutre and William Shkrob got back on track today winning 6-4 from the No. 3 position to give West Florida the one-point advantage heading into singles.

In singles, the Argonauts had to fight for every point they won and narrowly edged the Statesmen taking points from the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 6 positions.

Juan Cabrera was the first to finish for the Argonauts winning 7-5, 6-2 from the No. 3 position to improve to 16-0 on the season. Bojadjiev won the next point for the Argonauts pulling out a three-set thriller winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 from the No. 1 position.

However, while these two matches concluded, Delta State had gained some momentum on the other courts and picked up three huge points from the No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 positions to tie the match a three apiece.

The fate of both teams now rested on the battle at the No. 6 position where Miralles Miro was taking on Elizarraraz del Arco of Delta State in what Head Coach Derrick Racine dubbed as "the match of the tournament".

After Miralles Miro secured a hard-fought 6-4 win in set one both players battled back in forth in set two forcing a decisive tiebreaker. After trading points back and forth, including three match points for West Florida and three set points for Delta State, Miralles Miro was finally able to get it done winning 14-12 in the tiebreaker to secure the win.

Here is what Coach Racine had to say about the exciting match:

"Doubles was very close as we were up two breaks from both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions before Delta State fought back," noted Coach Racine. "Ultimately we secured the lone point which was huge for us since we knew singles play would be very competitive. In singles, every match was close on each court. Sed picked up a huge win from the No. 1 spot while Cabrera keeps finding ways to win for us at the No.3 position. I thought Lluis played great today and pulled out a huge win for us at the No. 6 position".

This now marks three times this season that the Argonauts have taken down Delta State, however, this matchup was by far the closest. West Florida will now move on to tomorrow's championship where they will take on top-seeded Valdosta State.

Schedule for Saturday – With the win, West Florida now clinches a spot in the GSC Championship match for the tenth straight season where they will face the No. 1 seed Valdosta State. First serve is scheduled for 10 AM from Lagoon Park in Montgomery, Alabama, and with the chance of weather in the area be sure to follow GoArgos.com and the UWF Men's Tennis social media pages for updates and information on the match.

Scouting Valdosta State – The Blazers enter Saturday's matchup as the No. 1 seed after going 12-1 during the regular season. As another powerhouse within the Gulf South Conference both Valdosta State and West Florida have met in the past five GSC Championships and have combined for 25 championships all time.

In the lone meeting between the two teams this season, it was Valdosta State getting the upper hand of the Argos winning 5-2 from Valdosta, Georgia. This win has helped propel the Blazers up the national polls as they currently sit as the No. 3 ranked team in the country after their efforts in the regular season.

Tomorrow's match will also see the Blazers try to extend their championship lead of the Argonauts as they currently have won 13 championships to West Florida's 12.
