UWF Drops Series Finale At Union

Argos will be back at home on Friday against Montevallo

Box Score

JACKSON, Tenn.
- The 11th ranked University of West Florida Baseball dropped their series finale at Union by a final of 13-8 on Saturday afternoon at Fesmire Field in Jackson, Tennessee.

UWF falls to 22-6 and 21-6 in the Gulf South Conference while Union improves to 10-17 on the year.  The loss snaps West Florida's 10-game win streak, the longest of the season for the Argos.  However, by virtue of yesterday's double-header sweep, the Argos won their seventh-straight series and stay in second place in the conference.

West Florida had 11 hits in the match-up, but struggled to get runners home as they left 15 runners on-base which included multiple innings of leaving the bases loaded.  UWF also committed a season-high three errors on the day, leading to five unearned runs for the Bulldogs.

"It was a tough loss today", said UWF Head Coach Mike Jeffcoat.  "We did not pitch well and we made some bad mistake mistakes in the first inning that led to four unearned runs.  We have to pitch better as we cannot expect to score 15 runs a game to win.  We'll need to get our confidence back on the mound ahead of next weekend's series."

Miller Hancock, Cullan O'Shea and Jason Roberts had two hits each, while Dylan Menhennett had a team-leading two RBI's.  Menhennett also extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a two-RBI single in the eighth, tying him with Chris Poulsen for seventh-place all-time in school history as Poulsen had a hit in 17 straight games in the 1998 season.

The story of the game was the Union offense, however as the Bulldogs piled up 13 runs on 12 hits.  UU tagged Argo starting pitcher, Joey Wozniak, with four runs in the first (all unearned) after an error by third baseman True Fontenot.  Wozniak was only able to pitch one inning as the right-hander allowed four runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout.  With the loss, Wozniak moves to 1-1 on the season.

UWF would use a total of six pitchers in the ballgame, with none of the six throwing more than three innings.  Hunter Lucas came in on relief of Wozniak and went three innings, allowing two runs on two hits, with Roberts following him with two innings of his own as he gave up two runs of his own.  Brendon Case, Robert Sherlock and Sean Means pitched the final three innings for the Argonauts as they allowed a season-high in runs.

Austin Zeitler led all Bulldogs with three hits and three RBI's on the afternoon while Ryan Lee added four RBI's of his own.

West Florida would battle back into the game after trailing 6-0 after five innings as the visitors chased UU starting pitcher, Sam McMillian, in the sixth following an RBI double by Roberts to score Justin Dunnam.  McMillian did get the win for Union as he improved to 2-4.

UWF would score seven runs on the Bulldog bullpen, including three in the top of the ninth on doubles by Jack Schad and O'Shea, but the deficit was too much ultimately to overcome.

West Florida will be back in action at home on Friday and Saturday as they host Montevallo in a crucial conference series.  First pitch on Friday night from Jim Spooner Field is set for 6 p.m.
