No. 22 UWF Pulls Off Comeback Win to Sweep Union

Argonauts score three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the series

JACKSON, Tenn. – The University of West Florida softball team scored seven runs over the final three innings of Saturday's series finale against Union to finish the sweep and cap off the weekend with a come-from-behind win. With the 7-6 victory, finished off with a clutch home run in the seventh inning from catcher Jacquelynne Poling, UWF improves to 21-10 overall and 15-6 in the Gulf South Conference.

Kelsey Sweatt got the win after throwing six innings of relief, improving to 9-3 and striking out 8 Union batters along the way. It was Sweatt's second win of the weekend, and she finished the series with a 1.62 ERA over 13.0 innings with 20 strikeouts and a .191 opponent batting average.

Union got ahead early with a five-run first inning. The first run scored on a bases-loaded walk before Tori York hit a grand slam to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead 5-0.

UWF struck for a run in the fifth to cut into the lead, after shortstop Mika Garcia drew a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Teala Howard and scored on a wild throw from UU catcher Tori York.

The Lady Bulldogs picked up another run in the bottom of the fifth on a bunt single by Gabby Morris that scored Samantha McDaniel from second base.

The Argonauts would bounce back and rally in the top of the sixth, with Kara Wilson, Ally Merrill, and Jacquelynne Poling drawing walks to start the inning and load the bases. Courtney McLellan cut into the Union lead with a two-run single to left, and catcher Brett Leiva added another run with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 6-4.

The comeback was completed in the top of the seventh, starting with a bunt single from Howard. After Kayanna Perez moved Howard to third on a sacrifice bunt, Wilson singled through the right side to put UWF within a run.

Just two batters later, Jacquelynne Poling belted her sixth home run of the year with Wilson on second to give UWF the 7-6 lead. All six of her home runs have come since March 9, and her round-tripper on Saturday was her second game-winner of the season – she also had one against Auburn Montgomery on March 12.

Montana Young got the start in the circle and was charged with four earned runs and an additional unearned run, with two strikeouts in one inning of work.

UWF returns home next weekend for a GSC series against Montevallo, on Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10 at the UWF Softball Complex.
