Argonauts Split First Day of Competition at UIndy Invitational

West Florida (5-1) will play two more matches tomorrow to close out Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, In. – After starting their season 4-0 from their home tournament at the UWF Field House, the University of West Florida Volleyball team got their first taste of competition on the road today playing from the UIndy Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In a field made up of nine teams from around the country, West Florida took on Cedarville and the hosts UIndy to start the weekend splitting the results to move to 5-1 on the year.

The Argonauts now advance to the second day of competition from the Hoosier State where they will take on familiar foe Wheeling as well as Ashland to close out the weekend.

Against Cedarville: Taking on the Yellow Jackets, West Florida wasted no time showing their power and offensive ability sweeping Cedarville 3-0 to start the Invitational.

Madi Cooler, the Gulf South Conference's reigning Offensive Player of the Week, picked up right where she left off last week finishing with 12 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double in just five matches.

Veresia Yon and Tyler Fezzey each added on over five kills in this first match of the day while Junior setter Taylor Vaneekeren tossed up 17 assists to add to her team-leading total for the season.

Defensively the Argonauts were dominant against Cedarville allowing just 18 kills in the match for a -.023 hitting % for the Yellow Jackets. Alex Oliver, Jenna Zydlo, and Yon were all a big part of this defensive success as all three picked up two blocks in the match.

Against UIndy: In the nightcap of the first day of competition, the Argonauts were not able to overtake the hosts UIndy dropping a hard-fought match 3-1 for their first loss of the season.

With every set, minus the final fourth set, finishing 23-25, 25-23, and 23-25 this match was anyone's for the taking.

The real momentum shift in this match came in set three when the Greyhounds were able to fight back from a late 20-17 deficit to take the 2-1 lead in the match. Then in set four, West Florida was never able to jump ahead of UIndy and dropped the set and the match.

Cooler and Yon each tabbed double-digit kills in the match while Vaneekeren put up 42 assists as well as six blocks in an all-around excellent match from the setter.

Saturday's Schedule: Play begins bright and early on Saturday for the Argonauts as they are set to face Wheeling for the second time this season beginning at 9 am (CST). Once wrapped up, West Florida will have a bit of a break before returning at 5 pm (CST) to face Ashland in their final match of the weekend.
