INDIANAPOLIS, In. – After stumbling for the first time this season last night, the University of West Florida Volleyball team responded in a big way on Saturday sweeping both of their matches on the final day of the UIndy Invitational.
Facing Wheeling in the morning match then Ashland in the nightcap, the Argonauts did a good job controlling each match to pick up their sixth and seventh wins of the season.
West Florida, now 7-1, will have a few days off before hitting the road again to play in the FMU Invitational in Florance, S.C. at the campus of Francis Marion University.
Against Wheeling: Playing against the Cardinals for the second time in a week, the Argonauts set the tone early and picked up their second sweep against Wheeling in as many games.
Offensively the Argonauts were back in the swing of things Saturday morning finishing with 53 kills in the match including an outstanding .423 hitting percentage.
Madi Cooler had another match for West Florida connecting for 20 kills to lead the Argonauts while
Kierra Potts added nine kills and
Veresia Yon tacked on eight kills.
Defensively, West Florida did a great job picking up some huge blocks in the match totaling 13 as team including six blocks from Yon, five blocks from Potts, and four blocks from
Tyler Fezzey.
Against Ashland: Looking to close the UIndy Invitational strong, the Argonauts picked up right where they left off in their earlier match sweeping the Eagles for their seventh sweep in eight matches.
Playing 13 different players on the afternoon, several Argonauts saw their first action of the season in tonight's nightcap against Ashland.
Cooler once again paced West Florida on offense picking up 16 kills in part of her 66 total kills on the weekend. Yon was in double-digit kills as well Saturday night finishing with 10 kills to go along with her three blocks in the match.
In total, the Argonauts finished with 11 blocks in the match to add to their NCAA leading total coming into the weekend.
Next up for West Florida: The Argonauts will have a few days to rest and they make their way to Pensacola before hitting the road again to play in the FMU Invitational.
Beginning on Friday (Sep. 17), West Florida will take on Mount Olive at 10 am (CST) and hosts Francis Marion at 6 pm (CST) to kick off the Invitational. Saturday (Sep. 18) the Argonauts will take on Charleston at 10 am (CST) and Gannon at 2 pm (CST) to finish out the road trip.
