Lakeland, Fla- On Sunday afternoon the University of West Florida Women's soccer team won a double overtime thriller 1-0 against the Florida southern Moccasins. Senior
Blair Cowan scored the game winning goal for the Argos from a penalty kick. Cowan has scored in all four games this season. The Argos improve to 4-0 on the season as they wrap up the non-conference slate of the schedule.
During the first half of the game the Mocs controlled much of the possession but were on unable to capitalize from their scoring opportunities. The Argos would gain momentum as the half went on with multiple opportunities to score but being stopped by FSC goal keeper Jenny Staten.
The Argos would out shoot the Mocs 7-2 in the first half, with both teams picking up one corner kick each. UWF keeper
Charline Favier had one save in the first half. The Argo defense led by
Kileigh Whited limited the Mocs to few scoring opportunities after aggressive attacks to protect UWF territory.
The second half of the game the Argos controlled much of the tempo and possessions. UWF continued to fire off shots in the second half out shooting the Mocs once again 12-3. Favier would pick up one more save in the second half as not much FSC offense was able to get past Whited,
Hannah Wooten,
Kendall Bobbitt and
Destiny Hird.
At the end of regulation both teams were still scoreless and headed into the first over time. During the first overtime Florida Southern came out strong looking to string together a few attacks. However, the West Florida defense once again stopped their efforts. In the final minutes of the first overtime
Destiny Hird attempted to get a shot off for the Argos but missed just outside. With the score still tied at 0-0 after the first overtime both teams prepared for double overtime.
In the final overtime the Argos were able to get off four shots compared to the Mocs zero.
Brianna Pope was fouled with two minutes left to play setting up the penalty kick for
Blair Cowan. Cowan would score the game winning goal, securing the Argos fourth win of the season and her fourth goal on the season. Cowan leads the team in goals with four and has scored in every game this season.
Overall the Argos out shot the Mocs 24-5, with 10 being on goal. UWF had 8 corner kicks to FSC's five. Florida Southern keeper Jenny Staten had nine saves on the match limiting the Argos to just one goal.
West Florida is now 11-2-1 against Florida Southern.
Next up the Argos will return home to the UWF Soccer Complex for the first home game of the 2021 season. Friday's matchup on Sept. 17 will be the start of conference play for the Argos and the first time the squad has played at home since the 2019 season.
