West Florida Women’s Soccer Defeats Dustdevils in Overtime

Laredo, TX- The University of West Florida Women's soccer team opened up the 2021 season with a 2-1 victory over the Texas A&M International Dustdevils in overtime.

Newcomer Blair Cowan scored the Argos first goal in the 9th minute of the game on a set piece to put the Argos up 1-0. In the first half the team out shot the Dustdevils 12-2.

Texas A&M International scored their first goal of the night in the 70th minute to even the score 1-1. The Dustdevils controlled the game for a solid 10 minutes during the second half. However, the Argos were able to withstand the attack.

At the end of regulation, the score remained a tie and the two teams faced off in overtime. Destiny Hammac scored the game winning goal in overtime after taking the ball off a defender.

The first game of the season was an evenly matched game, going up against a tough opponent to open up the season on road. The returners did a fantastic job after not playing since the 2019 season.

"Tonight's win was a total team effort," stated Coaches Joe Bartlinski and Dustin Smith. "The returners did a fantastic job and the newcomers were able to play through a tough situation being down a player for the entire game. Our defense and goal keeper Kelsey Brann were phenomenal."

Next up the Argos will face St. Mary's at noon on Sunday, Sept.5.
