Houston, TX- On Sunday the University of West Florida Argos defeated the St. Mary's Rattlers 3-1. The Argos are 2-0 to start the season.
Freshman
Julia Comin got the Argos started in the fourth minute of the game scoring her first collegiate goal with an assist from
Blair Cowan. The team only built on the momentum after that.
Blair Cowan scored an unassisted goal at the 10 minute mark, taking the Argos up 2-0. Throughout the first half the Argos controlled much of the game out shooting the Rattlers 5-2.Â
Brianna Pope scored the final go for the Argos in the 25th minute of play, after an assist from
Julia Comin.Â
Defensively in the first half the UWF defense was unstoppable only allowing 2 shots in the entire half. During the first half
Destiny Hird and
Chayse McGirt were both able to get shots off, just missing out left and out top. The team went into half time with a 3-0 lead.Â
The second half of the game started with both teams changing keepers.
Charline Favier came into the game and was immediately tested with a penalty kick from St. Mary's Kylie Von Holle and ultimately got the save. St. Mary's did however take advantage of the momentum change and scored their first goal of the game in the 53rd minute, making the score 3-1. Eliza Merrion would score the Rattlers only goal of the game. During the second half of the game the Rattlers did outshoot the Argos 7-4.
Throughout the entire game Argos showed dominance in their defense all across the field. Defenders
Hannah Wooten,
Kileigh Whited and
Kendall Bobbitt all played the entire 90 minutes, as well as midfielder
Destiny Hird.Â
Next up: The University of West Florida women's soccer will continue the road trips and head to south Florida and to take on two teams from the Sunshine State Conference. Friday, Sept.10 the Argos face Saint. Leo at 7p.m (EST). On Sunday Sept.12 UWF will face the Florida Southern Mocs.Â
