PENSACOLA, Fla. – In what was a weekend full of high-flying action, Saturday's finale of the 2021 Springhill Suites Invitational did not disappoint as the University of West Florida Volleyball team swept Palm Beach Atlantic to improve to 4-0 on the season.
With big energy and even bigger swings, the Argos established themselves in the match early on Saturday ensuring their first 4-0 start since the 2014 season.
Junior setter
Taylor Vaneekeren was once again fantastic for West Florida tonight finishing the match with 34 assists including setting up five different Argos who finished with seven kills or more.
Freshman middle
Jenna Zydlo had the best match of her young career picking up nine kills on 13 total attacks to go along with her consistent blocking presence.
Madi Cooler matched Zydlo with nine kills tonight to combine for the team high while
Kierra Potts and
Veresia Yon each had eight kills.
As a team, West Florida finished with an outstanding .452 hitting percentage in tonight's match which is the eighth highest team hitting percentage in program history. Over the entire weekend, the Argonauts out hit their opponents .350 to .123 which was a big reason for their success.
In addition to these accomplishments by the team, four Argonauts also received individual distinction for their play this weekend with
Tyler Fezzey, Yon, Vaneekeren, and Cooler all being named to the All-Tournament Team.
Cooler, who was named the invitationals most outstanding player, finished the four-match weekend with 54 kills, 39 digs, and hit .433% in her first action in nearly three seasons.
West Florida will now have a few days to rest from this weekend before traveling to Indianapolis, Ind. next weekend to compete in the UIndy Invitational.
