UWF Earns 600th All-Time Win With 72-62 Victory Over Mississippi College

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Jaclyn Jarnot had 21 points and 10 rebounds to help lead UWF to a 72-62 win over Mississippi College, earning the program its 600th all-time victory.
 
Jarnot's performance was her tenth double-double of the season as she was 7-for-10 in the second half, scoring 17 points after the intermission.
 
UWF (12-2, 7-1 Gulf South) shot 47 percent against a MC squad that was holding opponents to 35 percent shooting and 53 points per game.
 
The Argonauts were the stronger defensive team on Thursday, holding the Lady Choctaws to 36 percent shooting and just 2-for-17 from outside, or 12 percent. UWF also held a 41-37 edge on the glass.
 
Gabby Brown finished with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting with eight rebounds in 40 minutes of action. Zoe Piller had 13 points and seven boards, while Amara Newsom ended the game with nine points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
 
MC (8-6, 3-4) was led by Alana Canady's 17 points. Leading scorer Ally Alford had 11 with six coming in the fourth quarter.
 
UWF improved to 6-0 at home and 8-1 when scoring at least 70 points.
 
The Argos got four points from Newsom to close the first quarter with a 17-12 lead. The second 10 minutes were a little sloppy at both ends of the floor and UWF went into the locker room with a 29-26 lead.
 
In the third quarter, UWF fell behind by four, 35-31, before taking control with a 17-5 run over a 4:30 stretch. A 9-0 Argo run to open the fourth stretched the lead to 17 points with 7:06 to play. The Lady Choctaws closed the gap to six points before Jarnot hit a clutch 17-foot jumper with 1:13 remaining to stop the rally.
 
UWF is now 600-520 all-time with six NCAA Tournament appearances, one Elite Eight, four GSC Regular-Season Championships and one GSC tourney title in 28 years of varsity play.
 
The Argonauts will return to play on Saturday afternoon when they face Delta State (7-6, 5-3). Top time at the UWF Field House is set for 2 p.m.
