Sofield Surpasses All Time Three-Point Record in Win Over Delta State

Saturday’s 34 point win was the largest margin of victory over Delta State in program history

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The University of West Florida Men's basketball team defeated the Delta State Statesmen 94-60, as Daniel Sofield scored his 147th career three-pointer, surpassing the all-time UWF record of 146.

The Argos are now 14-3 overall and 8-2 in conference. The 34 point win over DSU was the Argos largest margin of victory over Delta State in program history. Prior to tonight's matchup UWF largest margin of victory over DSU was 23 points on Jan. 7, 2008.

"It was a long trip for them to Valdosta, they played up and down with them and then coming here and only playing about six or seven guys, we really wanted to push the tempo," said Head Coach Jeff Burkhamer. "I think we did a good job early of getting out and pushing the tempo. I'm happy for our guys, I'm happy that everyone got to play, it was just a good overall performance."

UWF got off to a slow start and was down 7-14 at the first media timeout when Coach Jeff Burkhamer called a timeout. Once the Argos stepped back on the court the offense came to life when Dave Petit-Homme started a 15-2 run that would help UWF take the lead.

After UWF came from behind the squad maintained the lead the remainder of the half. West Florida was 15-33 from the field on 45.5 percent shooting. From the free throw line, the Argos were perfect, going 14-14.  UWF dominated the first half both offensively and defensively and outrebounded DSU 28-15. The Argos bench scored 11 points during the half.

Petit-Homme led UWF in scoring at the half with eight points. UWF had a 47-32 lead going into the second half.

Delta State was 11-36 in the first half. The Statesmen knocked down six three pointers and were led in scoring by Keelyn Dietrich with 13 points.

UWF continued to dominate in the second half and extended their 15 point lead. With 13:36 left in the second half the Argos took a 20 point lead and didn't look back. As a team West Florida was 20-36 from the field, for a field goal percentage of 55.6. UWF made four three pointers in the second half, with one coming from Sofield.

"It's a tremendous accomplishment for me," said Sofield. "It all comes down to my coaches and my teammates that I've had over the past three seasons. Without them that wouldn't be possible, they always put me in the best scenarios to succeed and lucky enough I've been able to hit some shots over the past couple of years so it's all credit to them."

Sofield scored his 147th career three pointer with 10 minutes remaining in the second half. Sofield finished the night as the team's leading scorer with 14 points, two steals and one block.

"He's just a terrific shooter, he's leading the league in three-point percentage right now." Burkhamer continued, "He takes great shots and we feel comfortable when he shoots, we know it'll be a good shot and have a great chance of going in. I'm looking forward to having him for a couple of more years and really just shattering that record, to where maybe it's never broken."

All 11 Argos who stepped on the court scored at least two points in the historic win. In double figures was Petit-Homme with 11 and a team-high ll rebounds securing a double double. Darrin Jenkins and Jejuan Weatherspoon each had 10 and Brandon Burford had 12.
