JACKSON, Tenn. – The UWF women's basketball team fell to No. 15/9 Union, 72-38, on the road at Fred DeLay Gymnasium on Thursday night.
UWF (13-3, 8-2 Gulf South) suffered its lowest shooting game of the season, making just 28 percent overall, 14 percent from outside and 46 percent from the free throw line.
Zoe Piller led the team with 15 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the year. She had 13 of the team's first 15 points but just two the rest of the game.
Charlotte Ellmore had seven points and made both of UWF's shots from outside, while
Jaclyn Jarnot finished with six points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Union (14-2, 9-0) came into the contest leading the GSC with 48 percent field goal shooting and shot 47 percent on Thursday. Shanique Lucas led four players in double figures with a game-high 19 points and Jaelencia Williams scored 13 with four blocked shots.
"When you shoot 27.8 percent from the floor, 14 percent from the 3-point line and 46 percent from the foul line against a high-powered offensive team like Union, you have to be able to match their scoring," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "And when you aren't shooting the ball well you aren't going to stay in the game."
The Argonauts held a 22-20 lead early in the second quarter before the Lady Bulldogs scored the next seven and ended the half on a 13-2 run for a 33-24 lead. They continued their quick scoring with the first six out of the locker room and never looked back.
UWF will return to play on Saturday afternoon, taking on Christian Brothers (5-12, 4-7) at Canale Arena in Memphis. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
