MEMPHIS, Tenn. –
Zoe Piller had a career-high 27 points to lead UWF but the Argonauts fell to Christian Brothers, 74-70, at Canale Arena on Saturday.
Piller was unstoppable in the first half, making 8-of-9 from the floor for 16 points as the Argos grabbed a 37-32 lead at the break.
UWF continued to build its lead, claiming a 61-48 edge with 7:44 to play. CBU battled back to tie the game at 63 three minutes later and took the lead 70-67 with an 8-0 run. The Argos re-tied it on a Piller free throw and a
Jaclyn Jarnot layup with 22 tics left.
On the ensuing possession, UWF's
Fanny Hulmi slid over on help defense to draw a charge on CBU's Emily Jones but was called for a block and sent the GSC's leading scorer to the line where she made a pair of free throws with 14.5 remaining. UWF missed two shots on its final possession and had to foul when the Lady Bucs got the rebound with less than a second to play.
"We have to learn how to finish a game," UWF head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "This is the second time (in four losses) where we have had a sizable lead and let teams back into the game where they won it. We can't do that against teams in our league, especially on the road."
UWF (13-4, 8-3 Gulf South) dropped its second game of the current 4-game road trip. The Argos bounced back from Thursday's poor shooting night to make 42 percent against the Lady Bucs and outrebounded them 43-29.
Jarnot had 18 points and 10 rebounds for her 12th double of the seasons, while Piller's 10 boards pushed her to her ninth overall. It was the seventh time the duo had one in the same game. They are the nation's leading scoring frontcourt tandem at 33.7 points per game.
The area where CBU (6-12, 5-7) capitalized was in transition – scoring 25 points off 17 UWF turnovers – and at the free throw line in the fourth quarter. They shot 67 percent in the final 10 minutes and were 11-of-12 at the free throw line.
Jones came into the game averaging 20 points per game and finished with 27 on 9-of-12 shooting. Darcy Doran had 12 and the Lady Bucs got 10 apiece from bench players Braylee McMath and Jeremia Montgomery.
UWF will step out of conference play on Tuesday to face Spring Hill (3-13) on the road in Mobile, Alabama. Tip-off at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center is 5:30 p.m.
