PENSACOLA, Fla.- The West Florida Men's Soccer Team took down, nationally ranked Montevallo 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Argonauts improve 6-2-2 on the season and 4-0-2 in GSC play.
The Falcons were undefeated in conference play (5-0) and No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll before facing the Argonauts at the UWF Soccer Complex.
In the first half, the Argonaut defense would face their first challenge in the 7
th minute when UWF goalkeeper
Nicolas Meckien had two major saves back-to-back from two shots by defender Gabriele Valerio.
UWF defenders
Lucas Barankiewicz, Eduardo Quieroz, and
Keegan Lynch held up the Argo backline to limit the Falcons to only four shots in the first half.
The first shot for the Argos would come in the 9
th minute from midfielder
Finn Werner, who's shot was blocked from inside the box. The Argonauts got on the board first in the 20
th minute when
Kendrick Hernandez dribbled the ball past the UM goalkeeper to hit inside the right post.
Both teams would remain scoreless the rest of the half, with each squad tallying four shots each. Meckien recorded two saves before heading into the half.
The Argos came out aggressive offensively in the second half as UWF recorded 14 total shots as a team.
Montevallo would equalize the score in the 60
th minute with a goal headed into the net by midfielder Narcis Bou Dalmau. The assist was handed to Sebastian Flores.
West Florida kept attacking offensively until the 87
th minute when
Jack Patching found the net to give the Argonauts the lead 2-1 with three minutes left in regulation. The Falcons could not convert in the last three minutes giving the Argos the 2-1 victory.
The West Florida backline limited the Falcons to three shots in the second half. It was a team effort by the Argonauts to defeat the No. 10 ranked team in the nation and No. 1 team in the GSC standings. The Argonauts went undefeated this weekend at the UWF Soccer Complex with a 2-1 win over AUM on Friday evening.
"These are the games that players and coaches love participating in. Both teams are full of quality players, and we were able to respond to the tactical adjustments of the coaches. Therefore, it was an exciting match that could've gone either way, but we are excited we came out on the receiving end," said head coach
Bill Elliott.
The Argonauts will be on the road for more GSC play next weekend against Lee on Friday and Shorter on Sunday.
