Argonauts Earn 1-1 Draw at Lee

Dos Santos scored the first goal in the 3rd minute

CLEVELAND, Tenn.- The UWF men's soccer team (6-2-3, 4-0-3 GSC) played an even 1-1 draw against Lee Flames (6-2-2, 4-2-1 GSC) on Friday night at Lee Soccer Field.

The Argonauts opened up the match with a simple goal from just outside the box from Kainan Dos Santos in the 3rd minute. The assist was handed to Fynn Geigle. This marks Dos Santo's fifth goal of the season and Geigle's fifth assist.

In the first half, West Florida tallied eight shots while the Flames recorded six. Both teams shared possessions but remained scoreless the rest of the first half. UWF goalkeeper Nicolas Meckien had three saves for the Argos. Lee goalkeeper Roel Martinez tallied three saves as well.

UWF opened the second half with energy and shot by Kendrick Hernandez within one minute of the second half. The Flames rallied with a shot in 47th minute by Mattia Baizano, but the shot missed just high left.

The Flames equalized the score 1-1 in the 53rd minute with a goal made by Eemeli Makela off a Lee penalty kick. This marks Makela's fifth goal as he leads the Flames in goals for the season.

The two teams battled it out throughout the second half, but neither could find a go-ahead goal. The second half saw neither team able to control and the score line all-even.

In the last three minutes of regulation, Flames goalkeeper Martinez had two saves to deny the Argos the lead.

Sophomore Josiah Fontenot shot the ball just outside the box but came up empty handed as the ball went right into the hands of Martinez. The Flames had five saves on the night to keep the Argos at bay.

Dos Santos got a shot off in the 90th minute from 20 yards out, but Martinez grabbed the ball to end the game in a draw. The shot battle was tight 12-11 in favor of West Florida. The Argos had six shots on goal to the Flames four.

The Argos will travel to Rome, Ga. for their second road game of the weekend to face off against the Shorter. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. (EST) on Sunday.
