PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 15 West Florida Men's Soccer Team claimed the GSC Regular Season title on Sunday after defeating Mississippi College 2-0. The Argonauts earn their 10
th win of the season as they are now 10-2-3 overall, 8-0-3 in the GSC.
Before the game, UWF honored senior
Teavon Spencer for everything he has done for this program. The senior from Jamaica led the UWF 2019 squad with six goals while helping the team reach the GSC Tournament Final and second round of the NCAA Tournament. In his senior year, he made a big contribution to the team's success while pursuing a master's degree.
The first half saw back and forth action between both squads as the Argos outshot the Choctaws 5-4.
Kainan Dos Santos recorded the first shot for the Argos in the 2
nd minute of regulation, but it missed just shy inside of the goalpost. The Choctaws would have an opportunity at the net in the 4
th minute with a shot by Guiherme Santos. The shot was saved by UWF goalkeeper
Nicolas Meckien as he had three saves on the day.
Neither team saw a goal in the first half as both defenses held steady. The Argo defense was led by
Lucas Barankiewicz,
Eduardo Queiroz, and
Fynn Geigle as the backline only allowed four shots in the first half.
After the break, the Argonauts remained aggressive offensively as Dos Santos scored the first goal for the Argos in the 56
th minute of play off a corner kick taken by Jaime Guillen.
Dos Santos had an exceptional game as he tallied another goal in the 71
st minute to double the lead off a dribble pass by Jaime Guillen. This marks Dos Santo's 10
th goal of the season as he leads the Argos in goals.
The Argo backline would limit the Choctaws to seven shots on the day. Midfielder Nicolas Milot led the Choctaws in shots with four. It was an evenly played game by both teams as they tallied 11 shots each and three corners.
"We hit the first goal of the season. Now, we get into the business end of things. You could be playing for a day or a month and we hope it's a month," said head coach
Bill Elliott.
The Argonauts will host the first round of the GSC tournament as the No. 1 seed on Sunday, Oct. 30. The team and time will be announced next week.
