PENSACOLA, Fla.- The No. 11 UWF men's soccer team knocked out Spring Hill 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the UWF Soccer Complex to advance to the Gulf South Conference Championship Semifinals. West Florida improves to 11-2-3 on the season as the Argos are on a five-game win streak.
The top-seeded Argonauts will face fifth-seeded Auburn Montgomery at 3:30 p.m. (CT) on Thursday at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala.
It was an even match in the first half with neither squad recording a goal. Spring Hill outshot the Argos 5-4 with Badgers forward Johannes Hanken Tjostheim leading the charge with three shots in regulation.
The UWF defense only allowed SHC nine shots in the game. Goalkeeper Nicolas Meckien tallied two saves in the 7
th and 35
th minute to keep the Badgers at bay. Meckien has 22 saves on the season with a GAA of 0.55 and save percentage of 0.759.
Both squads were looking for ways to score, but both came up empty-handed heading into the break. UWF pulled away from SHC as the Argos outshot the Badgers with a margin of 8-4. West Florida got on the board first in the 61
st minute with a goal by Keegan Lynch from inside the box off a beautiful pass by GSC Player of the Year, Kainan Dos Santos. Dos Santos currently has six assists on the season.
The second goal for the Argos would come in the last minute of play with Finn Werner netting the game-winning goal in the 89
th minute. The assist was handed to Teavon Spencer. This is Werner's third goal and first game winning goal of the season.
The Argos would go on to shutout the Badgers 2-0 to head to the GSC semifinals. The Argos outshot the Badgers 12-9. SHC committed 14 fouls to UWF nine. West Florida won the corner kick battle with a margin of 4-1.
