PENSACOLA, Fla. --- Ending in a similar score as their first meeting earlier this season, the top-seeded UWF women's soccer team pushed through 90 minutes to defeat West Georgia, 2-1, in the GSC Championship Quarterfinals at the UWF Soccer Complex on Sunday.
Â
UWF advances to face fourth-seeded Lee on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CST at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama.
Difficult to connect passes in the first few minutes, the Argos (15-2-1 overall) and the Wolves (6-7-5 overall) began to adjust to slick field conditions to make it an exciting quarterfinal game between the one and eight seed.
Â
It took two passes from the Argo defensive half to the attacking half to get on the board early in the 20
th minute. Bailey Erwig stopped a Wolves attack opportunity to gain possession and find Brianna Pope at the half line who had yards of space to attack. Kileigh Whited took off on the opposite flank to put the team in a 2v2 situation as Pope attacked down the line for 40 yards to pass of to Whited along the box for a tap in and take the lead.
Â
"We have some good gritty leaders. This team has some bite in them and continue to push for those goals," said head coach
Joe Bartlinski.
Â
The remainder of the first half was majority possessed in the Argo attacking half as the team took 13 shots and held the Wolves to none.
Â
The second half contained two goals that were determined by penalty kicks for each team. At the 54:19 mark, the Argo defense committed a foul in the box for the Wolves to finish and even out the score but bounced back as UWF found themselves given the same opportunity.
Â
Just three minutes after, the Wolves committed a handball that Blair Cowan stepped up to take and finish. The game-winning goal puts her with 19 goals on the season.
Â
"Blair is clutch, and we did a good job to not get down and push for that winning goal."
Â
The Argos outshot the Wolves 24-2 with an 11-1 shot on goal advantage.
The Wolves committed 16 fouls compared to the Argos seven.
