#25 UWF Keeps the Winning Streak Alive After Giving #11 Lee First Loss in 11 Months

Cleveland, Tenn. --- The winning streak stays alive as No. 25 West Florida takes down No. 11 Lee University to give them their first loss of the season and first loss since November 2021 on Friday evening in a road matchup.

Off yet another corner kick from Ahnalie Layman in the 54th minute, the ball found the back of the net to be the lone goal of the night. Kicking it into a crowd of jerseys that many Argo players got a touch on, the ball finally made its way into the goal that resulted in an own goal after Lee unsuccessfully got it out.

Backtracking to the start of the match, the first half remained scoreless after an even 45 minutes. The Argos (10-2-1 overall, 8-1 GSC) and Flames (7-1-4 overall, 5-1-2 GSC) took five shots each with the Flames having 3-0 shots on goal edge. The closest opportunity came in the 37th minute as Blair Cowan received a through ball around the 30-yard line and tried to chip the keeper as she was out of the net but the ball was shot just high.

Heading into the second half, the battle continued but the ball began to be played majority in the Argo attacking half. The Argos earned five corner kicks in the first nine minutes while the Flames created no action. The fifth corner kick gave the Argos the lead and was the game winner.

In the 82nd minute, the Flames had the closest opportunity possible as leading scorer Ellie Crisler beat the defense and hit a shot on the crossbar to just bounce out for the Argos to kick out of scoring territory.

Goalkeeper Maciah Lipsey was unstoppable and played her best game yet after earning a single game career-high of six saves to shut out the Flames. The last time the Flames were shut out was Sep. 4 in a 0-0 tie.

Good defense was played on both sides and only three Argo players were able to get shots off. Cowan and Layman totaled for five shots and Manami Okada had two shots and the only recorded shot on goal.

The defense involving Kendall Blackmon, Kaytlyn Larsen, Bailey Erwig and Destiny Hird all played over 88 minutes each and remains the least scored on team in the Gulf South Conference after holding the Flames to six shots on goal and keeping them scoreless.

In week five of regular season conference contests, West Florida sit at one in the standings with a six-point lead over the second placed team Mississippi College who plays their first weekend game Oct. 8 against Delta State.
