Camila Vazquez had 12 kills and
Jenna Zydlo was dominant in the closing sets as No. 13 UWF defeated Shorter, 3-1, at the UWF Field House on Friday.
UWF (16-4, 8-1 Gulf South) hit a bit over .200 in the match but was a very strong .250 combined over the final two sets after splitting the opening two frames with Shorter (10-10, 5-3)
The Argos came out with some strong play in the first set, posted two aces, two blocks and forced the Hawks into nine attack errors on their way to a 25-16 win.
The Hawks battled back in the second, forcing a tie at 17-17. From there the teams traded nine-consecutive side outs before Shorter grabbed a 23-21 lead. UWF tied it at 23 but Shorter won the final two points on a service error and a kill from Emma Richardson.
UWF settled itself in the third, with a 25-20 win and then cruised to a 25-15 victory in the fourth, riding Zydlo as she posted six of her nine kills in the final two sets.
Taylor Vaneekeren finished with 35 assists, four kills, four digs and two blocks for the Argos.Â
Alex Oliver matched Zydlo with nine kills as well..
The Argos will return to play on Saturday with the 15th annual Pack It Pink match. UWF will meet Lee at 2 p.m. in the UWF Field House.
