GSC TOURNAMENT HOMEPAGE
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of West Florida volleyball team took a clean sweep over Montevallo on Saturday afternoon, advancing to the Gulf South Conference Championship Match on Sunday.
The title match will begin at noon at the UWF Field House on Sunday, when UWF will go for its fifth consecutive GSC Championship.
In a full-team effort on Saturday, West Florida was especially sharp in the first and third sets. Six Argonauts tallied five kills, and
Avery Rodgers led the team with seven in the match.
West Florida got ahead early in the first, behind a service run from
Kierra Potts that saw UWF score six consecutive points. That run put the Argos up 17-8, and kept them well ahead of Montevallo for the remainder of the set.
The second set was a battle, which UWF ended up taking 25-23. While Montevallo took a fast 6-1 lead, West Florida evened it back up just as quickly and the teams combined for 10 tie scores in the set.
Jacque Martin earned three of her four service aces of the afternoon in the set, with two coming in late, critical situations.
The third set started off with back-and-forth points, but UWF had answers for every Montevallo run. Trailing 16-15, West Florida had a six-point run, where
Camila Vazquez tallied three kills and a block to give the Argonauts a 21-16 lead.
That lead would be enough, and UWF ran off another four consecutive points to finish off the match.
By playing all three sets on Saturday, setter and GSC Offensive Player of the Year
Taylor Vaneekeren set the UWF program record for sets played in a career. Vaneekeren also had five kills on seven attempts – good for a .714 hitting percentage.
Vazquez, Potts, and
Alex Oliver had six kills apiece, and Zydlo added five. Vaneekeren led the team with 26 assists, and
Meg Brackhan and
Izabelle Sanchez had 14 and 10 digs each. Vazquez and Zydlo picked up five blocks to lead the team.
