PENSACOLA, Fla. – Shorter shot 54 percent and made 11 3-pointers in a 62-59 win over the UWF men's basketball team on Thursday night at the UWF Field House.
UWF (2-1, 0-1 Gulf South) shot 43 percent overall but allowed Shorter to make 11-of-17 in the second half.
The Argos had three players score in double figures, led by Daniel Sofield with 16 points. LaTrell Tate had 15 and Wendell Matthews finished with 12.
The Hawks' Ricky Knight, Jr. made six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
Shorter held a 32-21 edge on the glass.
The Hawks led for much of the first half by 2-4 points before a Sofield layup and Tate triple put the Argos in front, 25-24 at the intermission.
UWF led for the first six minutes of the second half before Shorter took the lead for good at 11:07 on a pair of Ian Reith baskets. The Hawks stretched their lead to eight at one point before the Argos battled back to get within one possession four times in the final two minutes.
But after a Matthews free throw pulled the home team to within 57-54 with 55 seconds remaining, Knight hit a deep three with 30 seconds to play to make it a 6-point game. UWF added a jumper and a 3-pointer late by Tate but couldn't get a steal with three seconds to play to give themselves a shot at the tie.
UWF will return to play on Saturday against Lee (0-1, 0-1). Tip-off is at 7 p.m. at the UWF Field House.
