PENSACOLA, Fla. – Haylee Luttrell and Jaclyn Jarnot scored 16 points each as UWF cruised past Shorter, 90-64, in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams at the UWF Field House on Thursday.
Luttrell, who joined the program this fall as a graduate transfer from North Greenville, surpassed the 1,000-point mark as she went 3-for-5 from outside and 6-of-10 overall. Jarnot recorded a double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds and added three assists. Moriah Taylor handed out a career-high seven helpers to go along with five points and two steals.
UWF (1-1, 1-0 GSC) broke the game open with a 9-0 run late in the first quarter. Leading 14-12 after a Shorter 3-pointer, the Argonauts extended the lead to 23-12 in 94 seconds. The lead stayed in the teens for much of the second quarter before Jarnot hit a three and Taylor beat the buzzer with a 30-footer to send UWF into the locker room ahead 46-27.
The Argos shot 47 percent and made six 3-pointers. They also got to the free throw line 35 times, making 24 of those.
UWF held a 52-34 edge on the glass and 46 points in the paint and 21 fast break points. They also used 19 offensive rebounds to score 20 second chance points.
Shorter (0-3, 0-1) got 15 points from Derrica McCall and 14 from Keyra Peterson. The Lady Hawks shot 31 percent overall.
UWF will return to action on Saturday night when it plays host to Lee (2-1, 1-0) at 5 p.m. at the UWF Field House. The Lady Flames defeated Valdosta State 56-55 on Thursday.
