PENSACOLA, Fla. – UWF and Lee played another of their tough battles on the basketball court Saturday, but UWF made too many mistakes in a 69-65 overtime loss at the UWF Field House.
UWF (1-2, 1-1 Gulf South) shot 42 percent but committed 27 turnovers and missed 16 free throws in the contest. Lee (3-1, 2-0) scored 21 points off turnovers and shot 74 percent at the free throw line.
Zoe Piller led UWF with 19 points, while Jaclyn Jarnot had 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Haylee Luttrell finished with 11 points also.
"I am disappointed we lost and disappointed we were able to play really smoothly in the first half and then the going got tough," UWF head coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "I think the name of the game tonight was turnovers and missed free throws."
UWF was in control for the majority of the first half. The Argos raced out to a 20-8 lead after 10 minutes and extended it to 27-11 four minutes into the second quarter. But the Lady Flames fought back and got to within seven at the half, 32-25. The Argos shot 50 percent in the first half compared to 29 percent for the visitors.
Lee tied it at the end of three, closing the final three minutes on a 9-1 run. The lead changed hands four times in the final quarter before Lee held a 60-55 edge with 1:49 to play. But UWF got a Luttrell jumper and a Jarnot triple to force the extra session.
UWF never led in the overtime and Lee outscored the Argos 9-5 for the win.
Lee was led by Haley Schubert with 24 points and Mallory Hampton with 19.
UWF will open a 4-game road swing next Saturday when they take on Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi.
