JACKSON, Miss. – The UWF women's basketball team suffered a 55-51 loss to Mississippi College at Charles R. Rugg Arena on Saturday.
The game was delayed 90 minutes and moved to Belhaven University's facility after the roof at MC's A.E. Wood Coliseum was leaking onto the playing surface.
UWF (1-3, 1-3 Gulf South) was led by Jaclyn Jarnot's double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds. She also had four assists and three steals. Jennifer Andrew had eight points and six boards off the bench, while Zoe Piller finished with 11 rebounds and four points.
UWF shot 28 percent but grabbed a season-high 20 offensive rebounds, scoring 11 second chance points.
The back-and-forth game had eight ties and eight lead changes.
UWF led 13-10 after the first quarter as they made three 3-pointers and had a 7-0 run in the second half of the period. The Lady Choctaws regained the lead a minute into the second period and held if for the majority of the time, securing a 27-24 advantage going into the intermission.
In the third, UWF got a three and a fast break layup from Jarnot to grab a 29-27 lead. But MC connected on three of its next four shots to go ahead 33-29. They stretched the margin to eight and were up 41-35 with 10 minutes to play. The lead moved to 11 early in the fourth before UWF pulled to within three twice but was never able to get any closer.
MC (2-4, 1-2) shot 42 percent and had three players in double figures. Brett Gardner had 12 and Kylah Julian posted 11 points and eight rebounds.
UWF will return to play on Monday with a road contest against Delta State (2-5, 1-2). Tip-off at Sillers Coliseum is at 5:30 p.m.
