TAMPA, Fla. – Fifth-seeded UWF fought hard but fell to fifth-ranked and top-seeded Tampa, 3-0, in the semifinals of the NCAA South Region Tournament at the Bob Martinez Center on Saturday.
No. 11 UWF ended the season with a 28-6 record and reached the NCAA Tournament for the 16th-consecutive season. The Argonauts also swept the Gulf South Conference regular-season and tournament titles during the year.
But on Saturday, Tampa was too much, pulling away late in all three sets, finishing with set wins of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-17. UT hit .190 compared to UWF's .047. The Argos ended with 27 attack errors. The Spartans were big at the net as well with 16 blocks.
"I thought we matched up well and we had moments where we played with them but couldn't get away from them," UWF head coach Melissa Wolter said. "The things that we normally do to teams just ran into their (Tampa's) blocks – their defense and block gave us trouble today and pushed us into an uncomfortable zone."
Jenna Zydlo led the Argos with 10 kills and three blocks, while Camila Vazquez had nine kills and two blocks.
Taylor Vaneekeren handed out 26 assists and added 11 digs and two service aces for her 16th double-double on the year. The senior all-American finishes her career as one of the top players ever to wear an Argonaut uniform. She ranked second with 4,096 assists, fourth with 130 service aces, eighth with 1,158 digs and played in a school-record 497 sets.
