3-Seed UWF Looks for Revenge on 6-Seed Lee in NCAA Championship

This is the third meeting of the teams this season with a 1-1 record

Pensacola, Fla. --- The University of West Florida women's soccer team looks to bounce back in the NCAA tournament after losing the GSC Championship semifinals to Lee University Friday afternoon.
 
Decided upon the women's soccer committee Monday evening, UWF (15-3-1) enters the NCAA Championship as the 3-seed in the South Region and will host the first and second round as 2-seed Nova Southeastern opted out to host.

No. 3 UWF looks for revenge as they host 6-seed Lee (12-3-5) Thursday, Nov. 10 at noon for the first round of the NCAA tournament at the UWF Soccer Complex.
 
4-seed Florida Southern (12-1-4) will take on 5-seed Mississippi College and the winner will meet up with South Region's 1-seed Embry-Riddle, who is undefeated (13-0-5).
 
This is UWF's 17th NCAA Championship appearance – most appearances by a women's soccer Gulf South team.

Tickets are $3 for students with a valid ID, $8 for general admission, and $5 for senior citizens.
 
Over the Weekend
UWF entered the GSC Championship as the 1-seed and took on 5-seed Lee in the semifinals. The team battled head-to-head but an 88th minute goal scored my Lee knocked UWF's chance of winning the tournament.
 
The first 45 minutes were scoreless with each team tallying four shots apiece.
 
Brianna Pope opened the scoring in the 48th minute off a cross from Manami Okada to find the back of the net and take the lead.
 
13 minutes later, Lee evened the score off a penalty kick and proceeded to take the lead just two minutes shy of the final whistle.
 
GSC All-Tournament Team
Junior Destiny Hird earned her second consecutive All-Tournament Team honor along with defender Kendall Blackmon.
 
NCAA Tournament South Region
The South Region has selected six teams from the Gulf South Conference and the Sunshine State Conference with Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and West Florida hosting first and second round.

Revenge Match Against Lee
UWF and Lee are 1-1 in 2022 as they head into third meeting this season. UWF snatched the win 1-0 in regular season (Oct. 7) with a goal from Manami Okada off a corner kick from sophomore Ahnalie Layman. This was the first UWF win against Lee since 2018.
 
Lee's loss against the Argos was their first loss of the season and their first loss in 11 months.
 
UWF and Lee met up a second time in semifinals of the GSC Championship, but UWF fell short after an 88th minute goal by Lee to take the win and knocked the Argos out of the tournament.
 
Scouting Lee in the GSC Finals
Lee advanced to the GSC Championship finals against two-seed Mississippi College in looks to win the trophy and earn an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
Lee got on the board first off an own goal by Mississippi College in the 21st minute and held the lead for the remainder of the first half.
 
Entering the second half, Mississippi College came in with a different mindset and hit four goals back-to-back within nine minutes of each other to shatter Lee's hopes of winning the conference tournament.
 
Lee concluded the game with a goal off a penalty kick to be defeated 4-2 in the finals and earn runner-up.
 
Lee has the second most appearances of a current Gulf South team as they enter the NCAA Championship for the sixth time.  
 
UWF vs Lee History
Including the two matches this season, UWF has a history record of 5-7-2 with Lee that began in 2013. The latest three meetings have ended with a one-goal difference and no team has outscored the other by more than two goals in all 14 games.
 
The winner of the first-round match will take No. 2 Nova Southeastern (9-2-4) from the Sunshine State Conference at the UWF Soccer Complex Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m.
