MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The UWF men's basketball team defeated Georgia College, 72-59, in non-conference action at the Centennial Center on Thursday.
LaTrell Tate had 17 of his game-high 20 in the second half and made four 3-pointers to lead the offense. The Argonauts got key contributions from several players – notably
Daniel Sofield's 12 points,
Wendell Matthews' 12 points and
David Petit-Homme's 10 points and team-high five rebounds.
Channick Nkoma came off the bench to score nine points and grab four rebounds.
UWF (6-5) won for the second-time in as many games and shot 44 percent from the floor while outrebounding GC, 36-28. The Argos made seven 3-pointers and were 19-of-22 at the free throw line.
"I thought we guarded them well and didn't allow them to shoot too many threes," UWF head coach
Jeff Burkhamer said. "We did a pretty good job of taking that away and we outrebounded them which was big today.
"We probably won (the game) at the foul line. LaTrell made some big shots and all-in-all, it was a pretty good team win in front of a hostile crowd."
GC (4-6) was 7-of-26 from outside, which is a team strength, but UWF extended its defense to hold the Bobcats under their average and forced them to play in traffic among the Argos longer players.
UWF trailed 28-26 at the half and came out with more toughness in the second frame. Trailing 37-36 with just over 14 minutes to play, the Argos got back-to-back threes from Sofield and Tate to seize control, 42-37.
The Argos never trailed the rest of the game and used a 9-0 run to extend the lead into double digits at 59-48 with 6:25 to play, effectively putting the game out of reach.
The Bobcats never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
UWF was 14-of-16 at the charity stripe in the second half, going 6-for-6 in the final 75 seconds.
UWF will return home to face Valdosta State on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off at the UWF Field House is at 4 p.m., following the women's contest at 2 p.m.
