Argo Men's Basketball Squad Hits The Road To Face Montevallo, AUM

The Argonauts have won their last three contests

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The UWF men's basketball team resumes game action after the NCAA D2 Life In Balance break, traveling to the Yellowhammer State for road contests at Montevallo and Auburn Montgomery. Saturday's game at UM is a 4 p.m. tip off and Monday's battle in Montgomery is at 3 p.m.
 
* This is the second-consecutive year the Argos have been on the road over the New Year's holiday. They were at UWA on Dec. 31 and UAH on Jan. 2. There were not games over the calendar switch during the COVID 2020-21 season. The two previous years, UWF played a single game at Valdosta State on Jan. 2, 2020 and Jan. 3, 2019. In 2017-18, a road trip at Shorter on Jan. 2 and Lee on Jan. 4 greeted the Argos.
* The 2016-17 season was the last time the Argos truly rang in the new year with home games on Dec. 31 vs. UAH and Jan. 2 vs. North Alabama.
 
ABOUT UWF
* UWF is 7-5 through 12 games and has won its last three contests. The Argonauts are 3-5 in Gulf South Conference play.
* UWF is shooting 44 percent from the field and is 6-3 when shooting at least 40 percent in a game.
* From outside the 3-point line, the Argos are converting 32 pct. They have made 19 in their last three games and at least seven five times, going 4-1 in those contests.
* The Argos are averaging 32.3 rebounds per game and have outrebounded four opponents this year, including the last two with  plus-8 and plus-9 margins.
LaTrell Tate is first on the team in scoring, with 14.9 ppg and 16 3-pointers. He has benefited greatly with the move from point guard to shooting guard, averaging 18.2 ppg over the last seven contests as he has raised his scoring average from 8.2 ppg. He has five 20-plus point games in the stretch as well.
Daniel Sofield leads the team with 14.3 points per game, 26 3-pointers, 35 assists and 10 steals. He has scored in double-figures 10 of 12 games and at least 20 three times.
* Wendell Matthews has started to get his game going lately, averaging 16.0 points. 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in the last two contests, while also totaling three blocks and three steals. He has five games in double figures while raising his scoring average to 9.0 ppg on 48 pct. shooting. He is shooting 65 pct (11-for-17) in the last two contests.

ARGOS RUN WIN STREAK TO THREE TO CLOSE PRE-CHRISTMAS SLATE
*  LaTrell Tate scored 17 points in the second half, including 12 in the final 8:49, to lead UWF to a 82-78 win over Valdosta State at home on Dec. 18.
* Tate ended with a game-high 23 points for his fifth 20-plus point game in the last seven outings. Jejuan Weatherspoon had five points, six rebounds and a block in the final 6:30 off the bench.
* Tate took over in the second half, making including three-consecutive buckets to put UWF ahead 70-67. After four-straight points for the Blazers, Weatherspoon made a pair of free throws and then got a huge offensive putback to go up 74-71. On the next Argo possession, he got another putback for a 76-73 advantage.
* It was UWF's second-consecutive win over VSU in Pensacola.

ABOUT MONTEVALLO
* UM is 5-8 this season and 3-6 in Gulf South Conference play. The Falcons lost their two before the brake but have won three of their last four at home.
* Anthony Komara is in his first season as the head coach following eight seasons as an assistant/associate head coach at Alabama Huntsville. 
* The Falcons average 70.5 ppg and are shooting 43 percent overall. They rank No. 3. In the country with an 81.9 FT pct. and average 11.8 FT makes on 14.5 attempts per game.

SERIES HISTORY
* Dating back to 2001, UM leads the series 21-9, but since the Falcons rejoined the GSC prior to 2017-18 campaign, UWF holds a 7-5 edge. The teams are 5-5 in the last 10 matchups.
* The teams split the home-and-home series a year ago, with each winning at home.

ABOUT AUM
* AUM enters the weekend with a 6-7 record and is 4-5 in the GSC. They will play Valdosta State on Saturday afternoon before hosting UWF on Youth Day at the AUM Gymnasium.
* The Warhawks are tied with UWF at 44 pct shooting on the season, both ranking ninth in the GSC. AUM is tied for second in the league at the FT line, making 77.3 pct.
* Three of the team's top five scorers are all newcomers, including Travis Anderson (15.7 ppg) and Jalen Gaston (12.9 ppg/5.3 rpg).

SERIES HISTORY
* UWF holds a 10-5 lead in the series with AUM, which dates back to the 2005-06 season. The Argos are 6-2 in Montgomery and have won the last two contests.
* 10 of the last 12 games have been decided by 10 points or less.
