Men's Basketball Hosts Union, Christian Brothers This Weekend

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Coming off a narrow road defeat to West Georgia, the UWF men's basketball team returns to the UWF Field House for its next three contests. The homestand opens on Friday night against Union before facing Christian Brothers on Sunday and Valdosta State the following Sunday.

UPCOMING PROMOTIONS
* Children are admitted free to the final three home games before the Holiday break.
* Santa Claus will be at Friday's game and will be taking pictures for free in the lobby of the UWF Field House.
* Sunday is a Green Out against CBU.

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS
* UWF is averaging 69,4 points per game on 44 percent with 6.9 3-pointers per game.
* UWF, Union (66.5) and CBU (66.0) rank 9-11 in the GSC in scoring offense.
* The Argos average 30.5 rebounds per game and allow 33.5 per contest.
Daniel Sofield leads the team with 16.0 points per game, while adding team-highs of 23 assists, 9 steals and 18 made 3-pointers. His 2.3 treys per game put him at 11th in the league.
 
UWF TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
* UWF is fourth in the GSC with 11.6 turnovers per game.
* The Argos have committed 13 or fewer in five of the eight game this season.
 
TATE THRIVING IN MOVE TO SHOOTING GUARD
* Junior guard LaTrell Tate is averaging 13.5 points per game but has gone for at least 20 points in the last three contests.
* Since moving from the point guard spot to the 2-guard, he has 20 at Mississippi College, 22 at Delta State and 25 at West Georgia. The last two outputs have established new career highs for the Marietta, Georgia native.
* He is 20-for-25 (80 pct.) from the FT line in the last six games. He is 17th in the GSC overall at 70 pct.
 
BURKHAMER CONTINUES TO BUILD A WINNING CULTURE IN YEAR EIGHT
* UWF head coach Jeff Burkhamer is in his eighth season leading the program and has a 108-89 (.555) record. Included in that is a 74-74 in GSC play with a winning league mark in four of the last six seasons.
* Burkhamer was named the GSC Coach of the Year in 2017-18 after leading UWF to a 28-4 record and a second-place finish in the GSC with a 17-3 mark. The Argos won the GSC Tournament Championship that same season.
* Just the fourth coach in program history, he ranks third in victories behind Don Hogan (239 from 1993-2009) and Marvin Beck (126 from 1967-76).
* He has an all-time 483-283 coaching record that includes time as a ABA professional coach and as a junior college head coach.
  
ABOUT UNION
* Union is 4-4 overall and 3-1 in GSC action. The Bulldogs snapped a 3-game losing streak on Friday with a 77-62 road win over CBU.
* The Bulldogs average 15.0 turnovers per game - third most in the GSC. They had a season-low nine at CBU in their last game but committed at least 14 in six of seven to open the season.
* Graduate student Tylandrius Parks leads the team with 20.1 points per game, up from 11.7 a year ago.
 
SERIES HISTORY VS UU
* UWF leads the series 8-7 and has won the last two contests, both of which were in Jackson, Tennessee.
* The teams have split the eight meetings at the UWF Field House, with Union taking a 63-62 win in Dec. of 2018.
 
ABOUT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS
* The Bucs come to town on a 5-game losing streak and are 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the GSC.
* CBU is shooting 45.9 pct but allowing opponents to make 47.6 pct. on the way to 72 ppg.
* Madison Monroe (14.7) and Nick Deifel (11.0) lead the team in scoring, both at 11 points or better.
 
SERIES HISTORY VS CBU
* Sunday will be the 20th all-time meeting between the teams, with the Bucs holding a 14-5 lead. Since Jeff Burkhamer arrived in Pensacola prior to the 2015-16 season, the Argos are 4-6 against the Bucs.
* UWF has won three of the last four played at the UWF Field House. CBU won the last game in Pensacola, 71-60, in November of 2018.
 
24-GAME GSC SCHEDULE
* The GSC men's and women's basketball coaches and administrators approved a record 24-game full round-robin schedule for the next two seasons where each school will play the other 12 both at home and away.
* The league schedule had 20 games for the past four full seasons and a league high 22 games in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17.
 
UWF PICKED 7TH IN GSC COACHES POLL, SOFIELD NAMED PRESEASON ALL-GSC
* The UWF men's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the Gulf South Conference this season, according to the preseason coaches poll last month.
* UWF earned 93 poll points, just one point behind West Georgia in sixth. Alabama Huntsville was the unanimous top choice, earning all 12 possible first-place votes – coaches could not vote for their own team – with Lee in second as they grabbed the other first-place nod. Valdosta State, West Alabama and Union were in a cluster at third, fourth and fifth, respectively. After the Argonauts, Delta State, Mississippi College, Auburn Montgomery, Montevallo, Christian Brothers and Shorter rounded out the bottom six in the 13-team league.
* Senior Daniel Sofield was named to the 5-member preseason all-GSC squad. Sofield is both a 2-time all-region and all-conference selection and is UWF's career 3-point leader. A year ago he was a first team All-GSC pick after he averaged 16.5 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game and connected on 42 percent of 3-point field goals with a career-high 70 made. The Jackson, New Jersey native entered the 2022-23 season with 962 points, 279 rebounds and 172 3-pointers in his 3-year Argo career.
