MONTEVALLO, Ala. –
Jaclyn Jarnot had 22 points, 15 rebounds and five assists to help UWF defeat Montevallo, 76-74, for a series sweep on Thursday night at Trustmark Arena.
UWF (16-6, 10-5 Gulf South) never trailed but had to hold off a late charge from the Falcons for the second time this season.
The Argonauts made 10 3-pointers for the second-consecutive game and assisted on 23 of their 25 field goals.
With Jarnot and
Zoe Piller – 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting – dominating inside as usual, head coach
Stephanie Lawrence Yelton got the big scorer on the perimeter with
Charlotte Ellmore making a career-high five 3-pointers on her way to 19 points. In the last two games, the senior has gone 9-of-17 from outside.
"I thought we handled their pressure fairly well and we did enough at the end to hold them off again," Yelton said. "We've been looking for that outside scorer to help open up opposing defenses. Most teams will clog the middle on Jaclyn and Zoe, so with strong perimeter scoring, people can't pack it in. We've been waiting on the perimeter scoring to come along and force their game plan out the window."
Montevallo (11-12, 7-8) got 29 points from Savannah Lee but it wasn't enough as the Falcons had their 4-game winning streak snapped.
UWF opened the game on an 11-0 run, getting a pair of threes from
Maddie Griffon and Jarnot. UM countered with eight straight before the Argos matched it with eight of their own for a 19-8 lead to end the first quarter.
The Falcons continued to battle and closed the half on an 11-1 run that consumed the final 4:54 of the period. UWF led 35-28 at the break.
The Argos made seven 3-pointers in the half, with three from
Peyton Lewis who made her first three attempts from long range to finish with nine points.
After a Snodgrass three to open the second half cut the UWF led to four, the Argonauts built the advantage back to double digits with an 11-2 run for a 46-33 lead.
Jarnot, who had her 13th double-double on Thursday, went over 20 points for the seventh time this year with back-to-back hoops in the fourth quarter as UWF extended the lead to 64-51 with 6:00 to play. But the Falcons fought back and made it a 2-possession game in the final minute before a three at the buzzer accounted for the final tally.
Nine of the 10 UWF players who played had an assist, with 10 coming on long balls. It was the second-straight game UWF made 10 from outside and the sixth time this season.
UWF will stay on the road for a Saturday matinee at Auburn Montgomery (6-13, 1-12). Tip-off at the AUM Gymnasium is at 2 p.m. and masks are required for all spectators per university policy.
