WINTER PARK, Fla. – The 10th-ranked UWF baseball team suffered a second-consecutive 1-run defeat on Saturday, falling to Rollins 3-2 in 10 innings at Alfond Stadium.
After the teams played nine innings without any scoring, the Argonauts got on the board in the tenth with some heads-up baserunning.
Chris Johnson led off with a double before advancing to third on a sacrifice. Cullen O'Shea was hit by a pitch and then stole second. UWF loaded the bases when
Alden Davis was intentionally walked as Rollins attempted to set up a force play.
But on a pitch to
Mark Townsend, the ball went behind him to the backstop and allowed all three runners to advance. O'Shea had stopped momentarily at third but when the Rollins catcher couldn't locate the ball, he sprinted home and slid into home ahead of the tag to put UWF ahead 2-0.
Rollins came back in the bottom half opening with runners on the corners on a walk and a single. A fielder's choice scored the runner from third before an infield single and hit batter loaded the bases with one out. After a pitching change, Ryan Coleman walked to score Jeslyn Whitehead and tie it
at 2-2. Herron then won it with an RBI single to left center.
"Pitching and defense kept us in the game again," UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "We did not get much offensive production until the tenth inning. We just couldn't close it out in extras. Give (Rollins) credit for a good comeback. We just have to find some rhythm offensively."
Both teams left nine runners on base.
UWF (2-3) finished with six hits from six different batters.
Trent Jeffcoat extended his hitting streak to five games and had a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt. Additionally, Johnson, Davis, Townsend,
Jadon Fryman and
Preston Moore all had one hit each.
Brendon Case (0-1) took the loss after facing six batters and being credited with all three runs in the tenth.
Salvatore Ferro went six innings and allowed five hits with a strikeout and a walk in his second strong outing.
For Rollins (3-2), Tate Stone-Frisina (1-0) earned the win with 3.0 innings of relief work where he gave up two hits, two runs and struck out three. The Tars had 10 hits in the contest.
The series will conclude on Sunday with the final game
at Noon Eastern Time.
