WINTER PARK, Fla. – For the third-consecutive day, the 10th-ranked UWF baseball suffered a 1-run defeat, falling to Rollins, 5-4, at Alfond Stadium on Sunday.
UWF moved to 2-4 on the season after finishing with four hits for the second time in the weekend.
Rollins completed the sweep thanks to three runs in the bottom of the eighth that gave it a necessary cushion to earn its third-straight win and a 4-2 record.
RC scored first when Nick Santucci led off the third with a triple to right center and scored a pitch later on a groundout.
The Argos answered in the next half inning when
Chris Johnson led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a
Cullan O'Shea sacrifice fly to center. The sac fly came one pitch after O'Shea drove a ball over the fence down the right field line that was ruled foul.
The Tars regained the lead at 2-1 in the fifth when Parker Smith hit a home run to right that barely got over Johnson's outstretched glove.
The home team added three runs in the eighth. Joey Rubin scored on an Adams Torres RBI single and then Chase Achuff and Adams Torres scored on a double play attempt that only recorded one out.
UWF mounted a rally in the ninth, keyed by back-to-back singles from
Trent Jeffcoat and Johnson to start the inning. Following a flyout and a walk to
Brady Browning, Jadon Frymon delivered a 2-run single to left to trim the deficit to 5-3.
Dean Hotz drove Browning home with a single to left before a double play ended the game.
Tyler Dowdy (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing three runs in 7.1 innings of 6-hit ball.
Kieran Casey (1-0) allowed three baserunners on a walk and two hit batters. Steven Swift earned his first save when he got
Preston Moore to ground into the game-ending double play.
UWF will play its next six games at home, beginning with the start of Gulf South Conference play on Saturday. The Argos will face West Georgia in a doubleheader at Jim Spooner Field beginning at 1 p.m.
