MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The UWF Men's Basketball team snapped a five game losing streak after defeating the Auburn Montgomery Warhawks 71-67. West Florida is now (16-8, 10-7 Gulf South Conference).
Wendell Matthews once again led the Argos in scoring with 17 points.
"I am really excited and happy for our guys," said Head Coach
Jeff Burkhamer. "We fought hard and deserved to win today. Our execution was good, we made free throws and we got stops. We've had some tough losses lately so it is nice to win again. Now, we can take a breath and then get ready for four big home games."
David Petit-Homme scored the Argos first four points of the game and led the team in scoring at the half with nine points. West Florida and Auburn Montgomery traded shots throughout the first and had five ties and three lead changes. The Warhawks went on a 4-0 run late in the first half to pull ahead and take a 34-27 lead to halftime.
West Florida shot 33 percent from the field during the first 20 minutes of action. Auburn Montgomery shot 44 percent from the field going 15-34. The Warhawks outrebounded the Argos 24-18 in the first half.
UWF started the second half with a 7-5 run before taking their first lead of the half. Throughout the remainder of the game the Argos and Warhawks battled through a close contest with multiple ties and lead changes. In the end West Florida was able to pull away after
LaTrell Tate made back to back free throws for a one point lead.
The Argos maintained the lead for the remainder of the game going 13-26 from the field on 50 percent shooting during the second half. The Warhawks were 10-30 on 33 percent shooting.
Overall West Florida was 24-59 on 40 percent shooting. As a team the Argos made 18 free throws. Matthews led the team with 17 points, followed by
Daniel Sofield and
LaTrell Tate with 16 points each. Petit-Homme rounded out the double figure scoring with 12 points and a team high seven rebounds.
Auburn Montgomery went 25-64 from the field for a 39 percent field goal percentage. AUM outrebounded UWF 44-32.
The Argos will return home for the final four regular season home games beginning on Thursday, Feb.17., against Shorter.
