PENSACOLA, Fla.- The UWF Men's Basketball team soared past the Shorter University Hawks with a 92-60 win. 12 Argos stepped on to the court and 12 Argos scored, with five guys finishing in double figures. West Florida is now 17-8 overall, 11-7 in the Gulf South Conference on a two game winning streak.
" I was really happy with our overall effort, it was a great team win for us and everybody got to play, everybody scored and we had five guys in double figures," said Head Coach
Jeff Burkhamer. "We really wanted to put pressure on them for 40 minutes, we knew our depth was better and we did a good job at picking the ball up and pressuring the ball."
The Argos dominated from start to finish both offensively and defensively causing Shorter to have a six minute scoring drought. UWF forced 12 turnovers and scored 10 points from turnovers.
UWF was 15-33 from the field on 45 percent shooting. From the free throw line, the Argos were perfect going 12-12.
At halftime West Florida led 44-23. Mathew's led the team at the half with 10 points, followed by
David Petit-Homme with eight.
During the second half the Argos continued to dominate and went 16-30 from the field and improved their shooting to 53 percent. UWF made five three-pointers during the second half for a 71 percent three-point field goal percentage.
Brandon Burford was 3-3 from beyond the arc, finishing the game with 11 points after coming off the bench for the Argos.
Daniel Sofield was 3-5 from the three-point line and had 13 points on the night.
Matthews, who has led the Argos in scoring the past three games also had 13 points while adding on six rebounds and five steals.
The Argos 32 point win was a complete team effort with everyone scoring at least two points. UWF outrebounded Shorter 42-35. 38 points were scored in the paint and 41 points came from the bench. As a team West Florida had 11 steals and scored 26 points from turnovers. The Argos were 31-63 from the field on 49 percent shooting.
Matthews, Sofield, Burford,
LaTrell Tate and
Jackson Henningfield each finished the night in double figures. Henningfield had 10 points and a team high eight rebounds, while Tate had 12 points.
Kendall Bynum had a team high four assists.
Up next the squad will face the Lee Flames on Saturday, Feb.19., at 4 P.M.
