PENSACOLA, Fla. – The 21st-ranked University of West Florida softball team completed a sweep over West Georgia on Sunday afternoon, with a 5-0 victory over the Wolves in Pensacola. The Argonauts are now 8-3 on the season and 3-0 in the Gulf South Conference.
The Argonauts stood out in every facet of the game against UWG over the weekend. UWF hit .403 and slugged .657 in three games, while averaging more than eight runs per game.
Jessica Ford led the team in batting (.700), hits (7), doubles (4), RBIs (5), total bases (11), and slugging (1.100) in the series.
Madelyn Vasquez hit .500 and drew four walks, with a double and two RBIs, and four other Argonauts –
Kayla Mayo,
Teala Howard,
Erin Moon, and
Angela Agurkis – hit .400 or better.
The pitching staff was also excellent, throwing to a combined 1.24 ERA over 17 innings.
Jeya Prasad,
Kelsey Sweatt,
Montana Young struck out 21 batters, walked just 3, and held the Wolves to a .190 batting average in the series.
With the sweep over the weekend, UWF now has 57 conference wins since 2019 – the most in the GSC. The team's .781 winning percentage in conference play and 112 total wins are also the best among teams in the league in that time.
Montana Young cruised through the first five innings of the game, striking out four with four hits allowed and no walks issued. The sophomore earned her first win of the season in the effort.
West Florida struck first, with some small ball in the second inning. After
Angela Agurkis drew a walk to leadoff the inning,
Morgan Zettle reached on a swinging bunt single, and
Mallory Vining reached after a wild throw to first following her sacrifice bunt attempt.
With no outs and the bases loaded,
Kayanna Perez lifted a sacrifice fly to score the first run, before a two-run triple from
Kayla Mayo and an RBI double from
Jessica Ford stretched the lead to 4-0.
The game's final run came in the fifth, when freshman
Erin Moon drove in Ford with a single to left field.
Jeya Prasad and
Kelsey Sweatt each threw an inning of hitless relief, with Prasad taking the sixth and Sweatt shutting the door in the seventh. Prasad and Sweatt both struck out a batter in their innings.
GSC play continues for the Argonauts, as they host Shorter on Saturday, February 26, and Sunday, February 27 at the UWF Softball Complex.
