West Florida Travels to Lee in Opening Round of GSC Tournament

The sixth seeded Argonauts will make their first appearance in the tournament since 2020

PENSACOLA, Fla.- The University of West Florida Men's Basketball team will face the Lee Flames in the first round  of the Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball tournament, presented by Ticket Smarter. This is the Argos first appearance in the tournament since the 2019-20 season.
 
West Florida will face Lee at Paul Dana Walker Arena, tipoff is set for 8 P.M Eastern. Live stream and stats will be provided.

Season in review: UWF is (18-10, 11-9 Gulf South Conference) sitting at sixth place in conference standings. The Argos started out the season on a five game win streak, picking up three straight road wins, a win over Albany State in the home opener and win over Spring Hill just before Thanksgiving . The squad played their second home game of the season on Nov.30., against Georgia College where the team came up short.
 
West Florida quickly bounced back and went on to win six consecutive games and started conference play 5-0. After defeating West Georgia, Lee and Shorter on the road followed by Auburn Montgomery and Montevallo in the UWF Field House. The Argos were ranked 22nd in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Poll for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
 
After the break the Argos suffered back to back losses against the University of West Alabama and Alabama Huntsville. The team found their rhythm after an overtime win against Valdosta State on Jan. 8., in front of a packed home crowd.
 
UWF went on to win three more games, extending their win streak to four.  At home the Argos had wins against Mississippi College and Delta State. The squads win over Delta State was a historic night as Daniel Sofield surpassed the all-time three-point record of 146 and the team had their largest margin of victory over the Statesmen.
 
On Jan 20. West Florida traveled to Jackson, Tenn., to face Union. The Argos won 68-62 briefly taking control of the No.1 spot in the GSC.
 
The Argos went on a five game losing streak after facing Christian Brothers on the road. The squad had losses from VSU, UWA, UAH and Montevallo. The squad was able to snap the streak on the road against Auburn Montgomery on Feb.12. Wendell Matthews, the team's second leading scorer had a season high 26 points against Montevallo and led the team in scoring against UM and AUM.
 
On Feb.16 the NCAA released the first regional rankings where West Florida debuted at No.9. During this same week Sofield was named to the COSIDA All-Academic District Five team for his efforts on the court and in the classroom, posting a 3.62 GPA.
 
West Florida wrapped up the season on a four game homestand going 2-2 from the Field House. The Argos saw conference losses come against West Georgia and Lee. UWF had wins over GSC opponent Shorter on Feb.17., and Spring Hill College in the final regular season game of the year.
 
Statistically speaking:
 
West Florida is averaging 77 points per game for a 47 percent field goal percentage. UWF is averaging 37.1 rebounds per game. UWF has the third highest field goal percentage in the conference, the fifth highest free-throw percentage in the conference and is second in team rebounds.
 
Daniel Sofield has led the team in scoring through all 28 games this season and has 470 total points, averaging 16.8 per game. Sofield scored a season high 24 points twice against Lee (Dec.11) and West Georgia (Feb.23). Sofield has two double doubles on the season. In the GSC Dan is fifth in scoring, has the sixth highest field goal percentage and second highest three-point field goal percentage.
 
The Argos most consistent threat in the paint and second leading scorer, is Wendell Matthews who averages 13.3 points per game and a team high 6.3 rebounds per game. On the season Matthews has 163 rebounds. Matthews has three double doubles this season and scored a season high 26 points against Montevallo (Feb. 10) and had a season high 12 rebounds against Tuskegee University on Nov.16. Wendell also leads the team in blocks with 26 and is second in assists with 70. In the conference Matthews is 11th in rebounds and ninth in blocked shots.
 
LaTrell Tate has been an explosive force for the Argos in the starting line up and coming off the bench throughout the course of the season. Tate leads the team in assists with 75 and is the third leading scorer averaging 9.5 points per game. In the GSC Tate has the seventh highest free throw percentage.
 
Brandon Burford, Kendall Bynum, Darrin Jenkins and David Petit-Homme have all started for UWF throughout the season and made significant impacts. Burford and Bynum are third and fourth in assists, Jenkins leads the team in steals with 31 and Petit-Homme is second in blocks, third in rebounds and fourth in steals.
 
Throughout the season the team has shown great strength in their depth with individuals stepping up on any given night to help the team.
 
Lee Flames- West Florida and Lee have met twice this season and are 1-1 on the season. Lee the No.3 seed is (18-8, 14-6 GSC), on a five game winning streak. The Flames last five wins were against Valdosta State, West Florida, Mississippi College, Christian Brothers and Union. Lee averages 73 ppg and 35 rebounds per game.
 
Quay Kennedy the team's leading scorer recently had a season and career high 39 points against UWF and is averaging 14.6 ppg this season. Kennedy has the highest free-throw percentage on the team at 84 percent and is the team's leading rebounder averaging 5.8 per game.
 
Jayce Willingham is the team's second leading scorer and rebounder averaging 12.7 ppg and 5.3 rebounds per game. Beyuan Hendricks leads the team in assists with 94.
