Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

West Florida Falls to West Alabama

The Argos came up short to the Tigers for the second time this season

PENSACOLA, Fla.- On Thursday evening the University of West Florida Men's basketball team fell to the West Alabama Tigers 79-69. The Argos fell to 15-6 overall and 9-5 in conference.

"They're a good team and they executed well," said Head Coach Jeff Burkhamer. "We still don't guard the ball well enough and they got to the basket too many times too easily. We had some opportunities to take some charges and when we did get stops we gave up offensive rebounds and some of those things are a recipe for defeat and that's what happened."

West Alabama got off to a 3-0 start forcing West Florida to take an early timeout. The Argos quickly worked their way back into the game and the teams played an evenly matched game throughout the first half. Brandon Burford and Wendell Matthews led UWF in scoring at the half with eight points each.

The final two minutes of the half were tied at 30 all when Matthews scored in the paint and solidified a three point play after being fouled. The Tigers managed to tie the game back up at 33 apiece when Shaddarion Allen made a three-pointer.

At halftime the score was 33-33. UWF was 12-28 from the field on 42 percent shooting, while UWA was 12-26 from the field on 46 percent shooting. Both teams made five three-pointers during the first half. The Argos outrebounded the Tigers 19-12.

In the second half the Tigers came out strong and scored 21 points almost half way through the second half. UWA showed their dominance in the second half and solidified the win after going 11-25 from the field on 44 percent shooting in the second half. West Alabama was led in scoring by Justin Allison with 19 points.

Overall West Florida was 26-54 from the field on 48 percent shooting. Daniel Sofield once again led UWF in scoring with 17 points. Matthews had a team high six rebounds and was second in scoring with 14 points. Brandon Burford rounded out the double figure scoring with 12 points.
