PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Alabama made eight 3-pointers and defeated the UWF women's basketball team, 65-49, at the UWF Field House on Thursday.
UWF (14-6, 8-5 Gulf South) shot just 32 percent as it lost at home for the first time in eight games this season. Jaclyn Jarnot led the offense with 14 points and had nine rebounds. Zoe Piller finished with 10 points and seven boards.
"It's frustrating when you have a decent defensive game plan and there are still breakdowns," UWF head women's basketball coach Stephanie Lawrence Yelton said. "The flip side is we didn't score on our end and that's an element for disaster, especially when your top two scorers get into foul trouble in the first quarter and have to sit for a lot of the first half."
UWF opened the game with the first six points before West Alabama scored the next 16 points, making three of their four first-half 3-pointers during the run.
The Tigers extended the lead to 33-17 with 4:11 left in the half. The Argos worked it down to an 11-point deficit at the break, trailing 35-24 on a Jarnot offensive putback in the final minute.
The Tigers took advantage of frontcourt foul trouble for three UWF interior players and shot 58 percent in the half and scored 22 points in the paint.
UWF got the deficit down to eight on a Jarnot 3-pointer midway through the third quarter but UWA countered with consecutive layups to push the lead back into double digits. The Argos never were able to get any momentum to turn the momentum.
UWA (13-6, 7-4) shot 49 percent in the game and finished with 34 points in the paint. They also outrebounded the Argos 36–30. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led four players in double figures with 15 points and nine rebounds.
The Tigers came in averaging 3.2 3-pointers per game and shooting just 23 percent but got hot and finished with those eight long balls to keep a comfortable distance from the Argos.
UWF will return to play on Saturday against Alabama Huntsville (3-14, 2-9) with a 2 p.m. contest at the UWF Field House.
