No. 10 UWF Splits With Florida Southern on Opening Day

Alden Davis hits go-ahead home run in last at-bat of game two

BOX SCORES: Game One | Game Two

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The tenth-ranked UWF baseball team split a doubleheader with Florida Southern at Jim Spooner Field in the season-opener for both teams Saturday.

FSC got a pair of 3-run home runs to win the first game 6-1 before UWF scored four runs, getting a 3-run homer from Alden Davis in the bottom of the seventh of game two for a 5-3 victory.

Pensacola natives Trent Jeffcoat and Jadon Fryman each had three hits to lead the Argonauts.

Game One

Starting pitchers Josh Pahlad and Nathan Madej brought their best stuff with each taking a no-hitter into the fourth. The Mocs got to Pahlad first as Jeff Lequori hit a 3-run homer to center field in the fifth to put the visitors on top. They added three more on a Jared DeSantolo shot over the wall in left center in the eighth for a 6-0 lead.

UWF pushed a run across in the ninth on a Cullen O'Shea double but was unable to do any further damage. Both teams had five hits in the contest but the Argos also stranded 11 runners on base.

Madej (1-0) got the win as he allowed just one hit in six innings with six strikeouts and three walks. Pahlad (0-1) surrendered just two hits in seven frames with a pair of punchouts and a walk.

"I though we overswung a bit and you have to give Madej credit," UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "We do have a lot of new guys who are trying to figure each other out in the heat of the battle."

Game Two

UWF struck first in the 7-inning nightcap when Trent Jeffcoat scored on a Preston Moore infield single in the bottom of the first.

FSC tied it in the third on back-to-back doubles from DeSantolo and Julia Cortez. An inning later, Cortez had an RBI single to left center to put the Mocs ahead 2-1. It was DeSantolo again in the sixth with a solo homer to right center for a 3-1 advantage.

The Argos broke through in the home half of the sixth, scoring four runs with two outs as they chased starter Aric McAtee who left with 107 pitches thrown. After Chris Johnson reach and stole second, Jeffcoat scored him on a single to center. Following a pitching change, Cullen O'Shea was hit by the first pitch reliever Collin Camarigg (0-1) threw leading to Davis' blast over the wall in left that put UWF in front again, 5-3.

"I was proud of the guys in the second game," Jeffcoat said. "We got a run on the board early but then got behind with another home run. But we responded. Chris Johnson had a big steal and then Jeffcoat had a big hit to drive in the second run. O'Shea getting hit and then Alden Davis with the big three run homer and that was huge.

"I think it just takes a little extra for a new team to feel that win and get that belief system headed in the right direction. I feel good heading into (Sunday)."

Jacob Estes (1-0) closed the door in the seventh as he earned the win with three innings of relief.

Both teams had their chances throughout the game. FSC left nine on base and UWF was unable to get eight runners home.

The teams will play the rubber game of the series on Sunday at Noon.
