LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The 21st-ranked UWF baseball team split a doubleheader to win a 3-game series over West Alabama at Tartt Field on Sunday. The Argonauts won the first game, 6-3, before dropping the second contest, 6-4.
UWF moved to 13-7 overall and remained in first place in the Gulf South Conference at 10-2. The Argos had won seven-consecutive league contests prior to Sunday evening's loss.
Jadon Fryman led UWF with three hits and two RBI.
Alden Davis,
Cullan O'Shea and
Preston Moore all scored twice – once in each game.
GAME ONE
UWF scored three runs in the first inning to get out to an early lead.
The Tigers pulled to within 3-1 in the fourth on a Jake Nemith solo home run. But the Argos answered in the next inning with a
Dean Hotz RBI.
UWA cut into the deficit twice in the next three innings on two Brayden. Lyman RBI singles through the right side of the infield, making it a 4-3 UWF lead.
UWF put the game away in the seventh with two runs on a
Trent Jeffcoat single and a wild pitch that scored Hotz.
Salvatore Ferro gave the Blue and Green six innings of solid work on the mound to improve to 3-0, while
Chase Wilkerson collected his first save of the season with four strikeouts in three innings to shut down the Tigers.
GAME TWO
The second game was more of a traditional pitcher's duel, with each team scoring just one run over the first four innings. UWF's came on a Fryman sac fly in the first and UWA's on a sinigle by Nemith in the fourth.
But the Tigers got to UWF starter
Tyler Dowdy in the fifth. Dowdy, who had retired the first 10 batters of the game, allowed the run in the fourth before surrendering a 2-run hit to Bullard and a 3-run home run to Nemith in the fifth, as the home team grabbed a 6-1 advantage.
The Argos battled back in the sixth, scoring three but had two runners on before a strikeout and stolen base attempt ended the rally.
Peyton Warren (2-4) earned the win and Mason Hollander picked up his second save. Dowdy fell to 3-2 on the year as he allowed six runs on seven hits.
UWF will now return to Pensacola for the next two weeks, hosting six GSC games at Jim Spooner Field, beginning this weekend with a 3-game series against Embry-Riddle. The Argonauts will also face Wisconsin-Whitewater on Tuesday, Mar. 23 at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
