PENSACOLA, Fla. –
Josh Prizina hit two home runs, including one in the ninth to tie the game and allow UWF to defeat Wisconsin-Whitewater, 5-4, in 10 innings at Blue Wahoos Stadium Wednesday.
Prizina drove in three in the game and was joined by
Preston Moore with two hits.
UWF improved to 15-9 overall and 2-0 all-time at the downtown ballpark. UWW fell to 7-3.
Chase Wilkerson (3-0) earned the win with three innings of scoreless relief and
Dilan Lawson saved his fifth game of the season.
"Josh had a big night for us and then to hit the ball late was huge," UWF head coach
Mike Jeffcoat said. "We've played four or five extra-inning games and been in a lot of one-run games. You don't always come through but the more your team is in those situations, you just have to believe and that's why you play 27 outs."
UWF snapped a 2-game skid in 1-run games to improve to 3-5 in those situations and moved to 4-2 in extra-inning contests.
UWW got on the board in the second inning when Ryan Norton hit a solo home run just over the wall in left for a 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks extended the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the fourth.
In the fifth, Prizina crushed a solo shot into the bay in left field to trim the margin to 4-1.
The Argos added another run in the seventh when Moore tripled to right-center to score
Dean Hotz.
UWF tied it with a pair of runs in the ninth.
Alden Davis led off with a double and then scored on Prizina's 1-out blast to left center.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Warhawks put two runners on with two out when Ryan Norton put a drive in a 2-strike pitch that
Brooks Mitchell caught against the wall in left.
In the tenth, UWF loaded the bases and then took its first lead on
Brady Browning's RBI single to left that scored Mitchell who had started the inning on second for the international tiebreaker rule.
In the Warhawks' half of the tenth, Lawson came on and picked off Norton at second to clear the bases before he threw any pitches.
UWF will return to Gulf South Conference play this weekend with a home series against Auburn Montgomery (17-10, 7-5). The teams will face off at Jim Spooner Field for a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
