Baseball Sinks Bucs With Road Sweep

The Argonauts finished the weekend off with a 14-0 win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UWF baseball team had 13 hits and completed a weekend sweep of Christian Brothers with a 14-0 run-rule victory at Nadicksbernd Field on Sunday. The Argonauts opened the day by completing a suspended game from Saturday, claiming a 7-5 win in nine innings.

UWF (10-5, 8-1 Gulf South) recorded double-digit hits for the third time this weekend and for the sixth time in the last nine contests. The Argonauts also extended their win streak over the Bucs to 27 games and nine-consecutive series sweeps.

The big blow in the third game was a 7-run second inning that was started with a 2-run home run from Preston Moore. Trent Jeffcoat had an RBI in the rally, while Cullan O'Shea and Mark Townsend both added 2-run hits.

That was all the offense Tyler Dowdy needed as he improved to 3-1 and threw the first complete game of the season for the Argos. He struck out three and allowed just four hits.

"Tyler did another great job on the mound keeping them off balance and the team got a good series win on the road," UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat said.

Jeffcoat and O'Shea led the offense with three hits apiece and they combined for five runs and six RBI. Townsend drove in a career-high five as he added a 3-run homer in the fifth.

The win came following an exciting finish to Saturday's halted 7-inning contest. UWF struck first with two in the eighth before the Bucs tied it with two in the bottom half. In the ninth, Josh Prizina scored on a wild pitch and O'Shea came home on Alden Davis' single to left.

In the Bucs' half inning, Sean Means came on in relief and got all three batters out for his first save of the year. Dilan Lawson (1-0) earned the win after working two innings out of the bullpen – one on Saturday and one on Sunday. He also had a save in Saturday's 12-inning victory.

"The guys came out with a lot of energy to finish the halted game and I'm real proud of the way they kept battling all weekend," Jeffcoat added.

UWF will return home for its first two midweek games of the season when it plays host to Southern Indiana (6-3) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at 2 p.m.
