Browning's Big Day Lifts UWF Past North Georgia, 8-6

The freshman drove in four, reached base four times and had a sacrifice

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Brady Browning hit his first career home run and drove in four runs, including the eventual game winner in the ninth to help UWF defeat North Georgia, 8-6, at Bob Steiner Stadium on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Browning got the Argos back into the game, belting a 2-run home run to left in the third inning that tied the game at 2-2.

Three innings later, pinch hitter Brooks Mitchell drove in Cullan O'Shea from second with a single to right center.

UNG answered with a run in its half of the inning to re-tie it at 3-3.

Browning had another successful RBI opportunity in the seventh with the bases loaded. He drew a walk that allowed True Fontenot to score.

Again, the Nighthawks answered as they loaded the bases in the eighth and got a sacrifice fly by Will Hardigree. UWF's Jacob Estes got out of the jam by inducing the second double play of the game for the Argos.

In the ninth, the Argonauts loaded the bases with one out as Browning delivered with an RBI single to score Fontenot again. Jadon Fryman followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice and before Mark Townsend cleared the bases with a double that scored Browning and Fryman.

Estes did his job in the bottom of the ninth to improve to 2-1 out of the bullpen.

"We found a way to win this one today but we have to play a lot better if we want to win at Delta this weekend," UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat said.

Browning had two hits, walked twice and had a sacrifice bunt that set up Mitchell's RBI opportunity in the sixth.

In addition to Browning's multi-hit game, Trent Jeffcoat had a pair of hits and joined Fontenot and Browning with two runs apiece. The Argos drew six walks and had seven hits, ending their streak of games with double-digit hits at a season-high four.

UWF improved to 20-15 and split the 2-game series with the Nighthawks. The Argonauts will continue their 6-game road trip with a 3-game set at No. 20 Delta State this weekend. The top two teams in the Gulf South Conference standings will play a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
