Argos Drop Series Opener At Delta State

Teams will play double-header tomorrow at 1 pm

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The University of West Florida Baseball Team dropped a series opener at Delta State by a final of 17-6 on Friday afternoon at Harvey Stadium in Cleveland, Mississippi.

With the loss, UWF drops to 20-16 and 14-8 in the Gulf South Conference while DSU moves to 24-10 and 16-5 in conference play.

Brady Browning and Mark Townsend led the Argos with two hits each, while Travis Gregory hit his first career home run to finish the day with a team-leading three runs batted in.  Preston Moore and Cullan O'Shea also tallied home runs for the Argonauts.

With their 12 hits on the afternoon, it marked the 13th time overall, and 5th time in the last six games that UWF has tallied 10 or more hits in a contest.

West Florida led off the scoring with O'Shea's two-run home run in the top of the first that scored Trent Jeffcoat, who singled to lead off the game.  It was Cullan's eighth home run of the year and 22nd of his career at UWF, putting him into a four-way tie for second in program history.

From there on, the Statesmen offense went to work as they scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth and four in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Moore did get UWF back into the scoring column with a solo home run in the top of the sixth, his third round-tripper of the season.  Townsend had his second double of the day in the seventh to put two on in the seventh before Gregory sent a ball over the left field wall to cap the scoring.

The three home runs by the team is a season-high for UWF.

Dilan Lawson took the loss (3-1) for the Argos after allowing seven runs on six hits with two hits in 1.1 innings.  The Argonauts used six pitchers in total on the afternoon with none of them throwing more than 1.2 innings.  Sam Brown and Hunter Lucas tallied a strikeout each.

Harrison Haley improved to 8-0 on the year after throwing five innings and allowing two runs on eight hits with two walks.  Jake Barlow led the way offensively for DSU with two home runs and four RBI's, while Blayke Dendy added a grand slam and five runs batted in.  Four other players drove in a run for Delta State.

The teams will resume the series with a double-header tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. from Harvey Field.
