O'Shea Sets UWF Home Run Record in Loss at Lee

The Argonauts fell 2-1 to the Flames

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Cullan O'Shea became the UWF career home run leader but the Argonauts fell 2-1 to Lee in the first game of a 3-game set at Larry Carpenter Stadium on Friday.

UWF (22-20, 15-11 Gulf South) had just three hits, with the first of those coming on O'Shea's tenth homer of the season to put the visitors ahead 1-0 in the sixth inning. His blast saw him pass Stephen Jackson, who held the record for 24 years dating back to 1998.

Both pitchers and defenses were doing a good job, especially UWF starter Salvatore Ferro. He went seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits with four strikeouts.

The one hit was a solo home run by Cam Suto that tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh.

In the ninth, the Flames loaded the bases with one out when Thomas Zazzaro singled to left center to give Lee the walk-off win.

Preston Moore and Jadon Fryman had the other two hits for UWF, while Travis Gregory walked twice and Trent Jeffcoat led off the game with a free pass.

Alan Zhang Carter (1-1) earned the win as he struck out all five batters he faced in the final 1.2 innings. Chase Wilkerson (3-2) took the loss after allowing the winning run to reach in the ninth.

Lee (25-21, 15-12) finished with seven hits and left seven runners on base, although three were in the final inning.

The teams will conclude their series on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Eastern Time.
